No. 3 Falcons, No. 4 Bears take centerstage in RGVSports GOTW

For a second straight week a pair of RGVSports.com 5A/6A top five teams are set to square off, with the No. 4 PSJA High Bears hosting the No. 3 Los Fresnos Falcons in the RGVSports.com Game of the Week.

The highly anticipated contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

The Falcons are coming off a thrilling last-second victory over Laredo United South last week, with junior quarterback Robert Pineda finding the end zone as time expired for the 34-33 victory.

Pineda’s heroics kept Los Fresnos perfect to start the season, moving to 3-0 with the win.

Meanwhile, the Bears bounced back from a Week 2 loss to PSJA North in dominating fashion, steamrolling the Mission Veterans Patriots 34-0 on the road.

Senior quarterback Myles Lopez tossed three touchdown passes during the win, while the defense forced six turnovers.

Friday’s matchup marks the third straight year the Bears and Falcons have met during the regular season, with Los Fresnos winning the past two meetings by a combined four points. The Bears did get the last laugh last year, however, knocking Los Fresnos out of the playoffs during the bi-district round with a dominating 35-7 win.

Mission soars past Sharyland with strong second half

MISSION — Friday night’s non-district matchup featuring Mission High against Sharyland High started off as a shootout with a combined 44 first-half points scored between the two.

In the third and fourth quarters, however, the Eagles were the team with all the firepower on their side as Mission prevailed 36-22 over the Rattlers on Friday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission to close out non-district play.

“We had a talk with them at halftime and they responded well and I’m proud of them for that,” Mission head coach Danny Longoria said. “The fact that we put two great quarters of play together defensively and offensively, we cleaned up a lot of things we did incorrectly, and I’m proud of them. They came out swinging.”

Five different Eagles hit pay dirt in the win while the Mission defense pitched a second half shutout after entering the locker room tied at 22.

“I’m just super proud of our team. It was a close game at halftime, but our coaches told us let’s keep going and that’s what we did and we came out victorious,” Mission quarterback Diego Salinas said. “It feels good having those weapons, the speed that we have and the play-calling, too.”

The Rattlers dug themselves out of an early hole to start the shootout. Sharyland defensive back Jose Vega ended Mission’s opening drive with a red zone interception and was tackled at the 1-yard line.

The next snap, Sharyland’s first offensive play of the evening, was a handoff in the end zone and Mission defensive lineman Elian Garcia was quick to pounce with a tackle for loss to cause a safety.

The Eagles kept the pressure on with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Salinas to receiver Christopher Kirk on the next possession for a 9-0 Mission lead.

The Rattlers shook off the slow start and scored back-to-back touchdowns on an 8-yard quarterback keeper by Calvin Harris and an 8-yard pass in the right flat to Francisco Gomez to race ahead 14-9.

Mission answered right back with the next two scores to make it a 22-14 game as running backs Richard Acevedo and Thomas Aparicio found the end zone on runs from 2 and 37-yards out, respectively.

The Rattlers responded with a little trickery on a double pass throwback as Harris took the snap in shotgun, lateralled the ball to Santiago Longoria to his right who threw it back to Harris. The Sharyland quarterback caught the ball and out-ran everybody down the left sideline for six. Longoria converted the two-point conversion on a shovel pass from Harris to tie things up just before the half.

The Eagles’ offense soared with two big plays in the second half and used a heavy dose of Aparicio to put the game away. Salinas threw deep down the left sideline to receiver Santiago Gonzalez, who caught the pass and broke two tackles before running into the end zone. The Eagles then forced a punt and used a jet sweep to Shelby Sital for a 67-yard touchdown run for a 36-22 advantage.

“Next week, going into district with two tough teams, teams are going to see on film that every guy is a weapon. Not just me, not just Shelby, not just Yandel, everybody is a weapon on offense,” Aparicio said.

Mission added a pair of red zone stops in the second half to keep the contest a two-score game with a turnover on downs and a fumble forced by Roel Martinez and recovered by Jonathan Kader.

“It helps to be able to distribute the ball to the great kids we have. I just think coming into district play next week against a very tough opponent, this was a must-win for us and we responded well, I believe,” Longoria said. “I think offensively, we played well. Defensively, we created turnovers when we needed them the most and I think that was a great job by our defense because Sharyland is a tough team. Coach (Craig) Krell does a great job and has a great team and best of luck to them.”

The Eagles (2-1) move on to District 16-5A DI play next week and open against the Edinburg Vela SaberCats (3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Tom Landry Stadium in Mission. The Rattlers (1-2) will look to bounce back with another non-district test against PSJA Southwest (0-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

Running Wild: Flores’ big night powers No. 3 Vela past No. 2 Harlingen in GOTW

HARLINGEN — Edinburg Vela’s Jonathan Flores entered the 2024 season with big shoes to fill. The senior running back was tasked with replacing now UTRGV running back and 2023 All-Area running back Jamal Polley.

Through two weeks of play Flores has more than filled those shoes, ranking sixth in the RGV in rushing and tied for fifth in scoring heading into Week 3.

He continued to establish himself as one of the top backs in the area Friday, erupting for over 200 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns to lead the No. 3 Sabercats past the No. 2 Harlingen High Cardinals 34-16 in the RGVSports.com Game of the Week.

“Those are some big shoes he’s filling,” Edinburg Vela head coach Ernie Alonzo said. “He’s not a pleasant surprise like some people think he is though. We knew what he could do and he’s very capable of it. But also, the guys up front. They do a tremendous job. We know we have an experience O-line, and we ride those guys.”

Flores looked like a threat to play every time he touched the ball Friday, finding his way through any small crease he could find.

His elusiveness led to touchdown runs of 4, 6 and 13-yards during the first three quarters. He finished the game with 31 carries for 138 yards and three scores on the ground.

His biggest play, however, didn’t come from the backfield but rather on special teams, taking back a kick 90 yards with less than nine minutes remaining to put his team up by two possessions.

“I didn’t feel no pressure,” Flores said. “I don’t mind what people say. I play my own ball and do what I do best. Anytime I touch the ball I feel like I can’t be stopped. Every time I touch that ball I’m trying to score. If you want to stop me, try and stop me. I’m going to try and get that touchdown.”

Flores work on the ground was complemented by a lockdown defense, which picked off Harlingen High quarterback Jonas Serna three times during the second half, including a pair of drive-killing interceptions during the third and a pick to all but seal Harlingen’s fate during the fourth.

Harlingen High running back Noah Huerta was the lone bright spot in an offense that struggled most of the night, eclipsing the 100-yard mark and find the end zone at least twice for a third straight game.

His 8-yard touchdown run during the third brought the Cardinals within one after a missed extra point, but Harlingen High would get no closer, with a pair of fourth-quarter field goals by Edinburg Vela kicker Robert Gonzalez putting the SaberCats in the driver’s seat down the stretch.

Huerta finished with 19 carries for 195 yards and two touchdowns, adding two catches for 14 yards.

Edinburg Vela quarterback Geoffery LeFevre turned in a solid showing through the air, completing 19-of-32 passes for 240 yards. Derek Rodriguez, Sergio Briones and Luis Garcia each recorded an interception.

“We knew it was going to be a tough test for us,” Alonzo said. “Coach (Manny) Gomez does a great job with his team. There is great tradition here in Harlingen. To be on the road and win in this playoff type atmosphere, it is a great learning experience.”

The victory improves Edinburg Vela to 3-0 against the Cardinals all-time, also moving them to 3-0 to close out non-district play. Harlingen High falls to 2-1 with the loss.

The SaberCats (3-0) kick off District 16-5A DI play against Mission High (2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Tom Landry Stadium in Mission.

The Cardinals (2-1) will look to get back in the win column at 7 p.m. Friday, hitting the road for the first time all season to take on Laredo United South at the Student Activity Center in Laredo.

Pioneer looks sharp in non-district win over North

Every two years, district realignment reshapes the RGV football landscape. Old matchups get bumped in favor of a more fluid schedule, and sometimes, new matchups emerge. Sharyland Pioneer took charge of the third edition of this matchup with a 31-14 win over Edinburg North on Thursday night in a non-district football game.

“We schedule teams like this, they’re a quality ball club… we have a long preseason, and we want to schedule teams that will get us better for our district season. They’re a well coached and tough team, and a long preseason allows us to get quality reps,” Pioneer head coach Eddie Galindo said.

With a month until their first district game, the Diamondbacks looked sharp. They have a plethora of weapons led by quarterback, William Goodloe. Goodloe, a former receiver, commanded the offense with confidence. His 35-yard strike to Matthew Maldonado set the Diamondbacks up first-and-goal at the 10. On the next play, Goodloe bounced his way through the Cougars’ defense with a 10-yard touchdown for the first score. It capped a 7-play, 62-yard drive. Two possessions later, Goodloe and Maldonado connected again, but this time Maldonado found the end zone on a 68-yard catch. Despite the tight coverage, Maldonado was able to win the one-on-one matchup and outrun his defender.

“We worked for this all week, it was a team effort. The line was blocking, the receivers were catching, everything just flowed together,” Goodloe said.

Everything was flowing for the Diamondbacks. Running backs Marcus Perales and Dylan Tijerina added to the rushing threat already imposed by Goodloe. Weapons-a-plenty, Goodloe connected with Luis Orozco on a 51-yard touchdown as he streaked through coverage virtually untouched.

“It was just a great team victory, I’m proud of them. I’m proud of my defense too,” Goodloe said.

The Diamondbacks’ defense cannot go unnoticed. They had their hands full with the Cougars backfield, quarterback Jose Ramirez and running back, Angel Rodriguez. The Diamondbacks were like weeds in the wind, bending but never breaking. They allowed an early score, but then proceeded to shut down a 15-play, 78-yard drive short of the goal line. Cornerback Evan Rodriguez stymied Adrian Maldonado at the edge of the goal line on fourth and goal for a momentum-killing stand that may have led to a Cougars 14-13 lead. The Diamondbacks defense held tough and shut the Cougars offense two more times on fourth down.

“The defense is the heart of our team, we have a lot returners…I’m proud of them, they’re playing hard,” Galindo said.

The Cougars kept pushing the Pioneer defense to its breaking point. Osmar Alanis drew the game even at 7 when he shot around the right side for a 66-yard jet sweep that landed him in the end zone. Alanis was an all-around threat for the Cougars. Alanis returned kicks and was the go-to receiver for Ramirez; he consistently found holes in the defense and converted third downs that kept drives alive.

“Offensively we moved the ball, but things weren’t running on all cylinders. They did a job of doing things that put us in bad situations,” Cougars head coach Damian Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez also has a month before his first district matchup, so the lessons found in such losses are not lost. Gonzalez found solace in his young quarterback’s passion at the end of the game as Ramirez addressed the team.

“He’s done an admirable job of stepping in and leading his team…he’s learning. He’s learning how to read defenses, he’s learning how to lead young men and learning how to own up to the mistakes he’s making…it’s says a lot about him,” Gonzalez said.

Weslaco East shuts out Donna in 15-5A DI opener

WESLACO — The Weslaco East Wildcats played lights out defensively to blank the Donna High Redskins 26-0 on Thursday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco to win their District 15-5A DI opener.

Weslaco East, the No. 9-ranked team in the latest RGVSports.com 5A/6A Poll, was suffocating from start to finish. The Wildcats consistently blew up running plays in the backfield and poured the pressure on with the pass rush to hold Donna to under 75 yards of total offense.

While the Wildcats’ defense was locked in, the offense had it going on the ground early.

East’s 1-2 punch of senior running back Margarito Pompa and freshman athlete Malachi Rodriguez took turns toting the rock to keep the chains moving.

One week after rushing for a combined 343 yards and three scores in a 34-31 win over Mission High, the duo combined for another three touchdowns in East’s District 15-5A DI opener against Donna.

Rodriguez scored first on a 2-yard quarterback keeper by powering his way into the end zone for a 7-0 advantage midway through the first quarter.

Pompa did his damage on a 3-yard toss around the left edge and out-ran everybody to the front pylon for six in the second quarter. He followed with a 9-yard rushing touchdown up the gut of the Donna defense during the third quarter to make it a 26-0 game.

The Wildcats started the second half with a bang as safety Jay Herrera stepped up from his secondary spot and put his hat on a ball to force a Donna fumble, which teammate Nehemias Munoz was quick to jump on to give possession back to the East offense.

Kicker Alan Alejos had a stellar day to lead the Wildcats’ special teams unit by going 2-for-2 on field goal attempts from distances of 20 and 38 yards and 2-for-2 on extra point attempts.

Donna’s defense tightened up in the second half to limit East’s rushing attack but the Redskins were unable to generate any offense against the Wildcats’ stingy defense.

Next for Weslaco East (3-0, 1-0) is a matchup against PSJA Memorial (1-1) at 7 p.m. next Thursday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr. Donna High (0-3, 0-1) moves on to face Corpus Christi Flour Bluff (2-0, 0-0) at 7 p.m. next Friday in Corpus Christi.

Rumbling Ahead: Palmview rolls past Lopez to stay undefeated

LA JOYA — La Joya Palmview fullback Kyle Bazan scored twice and the defense forced three takeaways as the Lobos defeated the Brownsville Lopez Lobos 42-27 during a non-district contest Thursday at La Joya ISD Stadium in La Joya.

The victory sends Palmview into the start of district with a 3-0 mark, picking up wins over PSJA Southwest (35-14), Roma (28-14) and Lopez.

“I think going 3-0 in non-district sends a message to everyone in district that we’re ready to play,” La Joya Palmview head coach Margarito Requenez said. “We’re going to line up against anybody. We’re not afraid of nobody.”

Bazan set the tone for Palmview from the opening drive, barreling into the end zone from 16 yards to put the Lobos up 7-0 just four minutes into the contest.

With Lopez clawing back into the contest with back-to-back touchdowns during the third, it was Bazan sparking Palmview again, breaking off a 42-yard touchdown run minutes into the fourth to put his team back up by two scores and never looking back.

“I just wanted to step up for the team and set the tone for this defense and offense,” Bazan said. “It went great tonight though. Shoutout to the defense and the line for stepping it up.”

Trailing 28-7 at the break, Lopez roared to life during the third quarter. A turnover on downs by Palmview opened things up for Brownsville, with wide out Diego Guerra taking it in from 11 yards out to make it a 14-point game.

A successful onside attempt gave the ball immediately back to Lopez, with senior running back Eddie Slovak punching it in from two yards to cut Lopez’s deficit down to seven.

Bazan’s long touchdown run put Palmview back up by 14, but the Lobos wouldn’t back down, making it a one possession game on a four-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Guadalupe Ramirez to Gabriel Rios with 22 seconds left.

That would be as close as they’d get, with Mario Blanco taking the ensuing kickoff to the house to seal Palmview’s victory.

“We knew that they were explosive,” Requenez said. “They’re a good ball club. Like I said, they’re explosive. We saw that the last two weeks on film, so we were ready for battle. We came out throwing punches, but I guess we turned off the light switches too early and it almost cost us. It feels nice to be 3-0 going into district play. We just have to make sure we correct our mistakes from tonight and we’ll be ready to play.”

Ramirez finished the game with 25-of-35 for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Rios led all receiver with seven catches for 105 yards and two scores, while running back Eddie Slovak added 106 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries.

Bazan led Palmview with 11 carries for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Joe Esparza and Cristian Martinez each added touchdown runs of their own, while Joseph Martinez and Max Solis each snagged one interception each.

Lopez (2-1) looks to bounce back at 7 p.m. Thursday against Grulla at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium in Rio Grande City.

Palmview (3-0) turns its attention to their first district game of the season, kicking off 16-5A DI play against McAllen Rowe (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Jasso powers Bobcats to bounce-back victory over Golden Eagles

Sophomore Oscar Jasso scored two first-half touchdowns to lead Edinburg High to a 28-20 victory over Brownsville Hanna on Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

The first-year varsity player scored on a 57-yard touchdown pass from JT Santa Maria and later on a 7-yard run to help the Bobcats (2-1) atone for a 44-13 Week 2 loss to Edinburg Vela, the No. 4-ranked team in this week’s RGVSports.com 5A/6A Top 10 poll.

“He’s got great vision,” coach Rene Guzman said of Jasso. “Once he gets the ball, he could do anything in a split second — cut right, cut left. Great things come from him.”

Hanna Golden Eagle Esteban Rodriguez (20) hustles with the ball Thursday night against Edinburg Bobcats at Coach Joe A. Rodriguez Field at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Jasso’s first score gave Edinburg a 14-7 first-quarter lead after exchanging scoring drives with Hanna (0-3) to start the contest.

After the Golden Eagles’ Esteban Rodriguez responded with a 3-yard run to tie it, Jasso scored on the ground to regain the advantage at 21-14 heading into halftime.

“The kids bounced back great,” Guzman said. “The coaches executed well tonight. Proud of them.

“Sometimes, coming off a big loss like that (to Vela) — the game was hyped — I told them to take it one game at a time. … It’s hard to shake off the hangover. But the kids did it tonight. And Hanna, they’re no slouches. Hats off to (coach) Mark Guess.”

Most of Edinburg’s offense came through the air Thursday, a stark contrast from its loss to Vela the week before in which both Bobcats quarterbacks combined to complete 2 of 11 passes for 18 yards. Against Hanna, Santa Maria would have connected with three different receivers for touchdowns during the opening half, if not for a penalty wiping away the third reception.

It was the first of two penalties that negated Edinburg scores. The other was called back during the third quarter, when linebacker Moises Hernandez returned an interception for a 44-yard TD.

Hanna Golden Eagle Esteban Rodriguez (20) hustles with the ball Thursday night against Edinburg Bobcats at Coach Joe A. Rodriguez Field at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Instead, Santa Maria was credited with two first-half scores, including an 11-yard strike to Jude Vega on the game’s opening drive.

“He came out throwing the ball a lot more,” Guzman said. “That was the game plan.”

After next week’s matchup against Edcouch-Elsa, the Bobcats wrap up non-district play against Los Fresnos. Following a bye, it will take on PSJA High in its district opener Oct. 10.

This marks the first time since 2014 that Brownsville Hanna has dropped three games in a row to open the season. The Eagles lost to McAllen Memorial 37-13 in Week 1 and 35-14 the following week to Sharyland High. They face Sharyland Pioneer, La Joya High and Mission Veterans, respectively, to close out non-district. On Oct. 11, they travel to San Benito to begin a four-game district schedule.

Mission Vets sweeps city rival, eyes Palmview matchup

Tuesday’s volleyball match between city rivals Mission Veterans and Mission High started just a bit more than 90 minutes late due to poor scheduling by host Mission.

When it finally started, the visiting Patriots did what they could to make up for the long-delayed start, getting their business done with a 25-15, 27-25, 25-16 sweep to improve to 4-0 in District 30-5A play.

The Patriots’’ win sets them up for a battle of the district’s unbeaten against Palmviewon Tuesday  if both teams win their matches on Saturday. Veterans hosts Laredo Nixon at noon and Palmview travels to PSJA High for a non-district match. Both teams are 4-0 in district and Palmview dethroned Mission Veterans as long-time defending district champions last year.

Senior Sophia Pacheco paced the Patriots highly improved attack, cranking out a game-best 18 kills and virtually being unstoppable when Veterans could put together a good pass, something they struggled with throughout the night. When Pacheco got those sets, however, she was money, often times finding a piece of empty court.

Freshman sensation Mady Perez added 12 kills and sophomore middle Delilah Cantu added 10 kills.

“Everybody needs to understand their role. If you’re not a go-to player, you have to wait for those sets,” Mission Veterans head coach Diana Lerma said. “You can’t get upset when balls are going to your go-to players and when you get your chances you have to come through. Mady and Sophia are a very good combination, and Delilah was there ready to put balls away too.

“That’s when we broke away in the first and third games, when they were all working together.”

Mission had fewer unforced errors throughout the night but both teams had long strings of sloppy play, including at the end of the second set. Mission held set point at 24-23 to tie the match at one set apiece but over the course of the final points the teams combined for a double, two service errors and an illegal rotation. Cantu then blocked a Mission attack and Patriots grabbed a 2-0 lead.

The Patriots, who seem to thrive on their organized chaos, something Lerma refers to as “jungle ball,” found their groove to kick off the third set and Mission helped with four attack errors, giving the visitors a commanding 13-4 third-set lead.

The three-headed offensive attack by Mission Veterans is something that has been on and off this season, but when it’s on, it’s effective as Pacheco and the Patriots showed Tuesday.

Mission Veterans Memorial’s Sophia Pacheco, right, swats a ball past Mission High’s Kayla Alaniz, left, during a match Monday Sept.09, 2024 at Mission High School Neuhaus gymnasium. (Delcia Lopez | [email protected])

“My mentality was to come to the game thinking we had already won because this was a once in a lifetime thing because we haven’t played Mission in a district game in a while,” Pacheco said. “It was a big eye-opener but the key was to come in with a good mentality.”

The Patriots did exactly that. After having to wait extra long to get onto the court, they went to work right away. Perez opened with three kills in the first four points and Cantu added a quick kill in the middle and followed it up with a thunderous shot on an overpass, gifted from the Eagles. They pushed their lead to 12-5 in the first set on back-to-back shots from Pacheco.

They are so young, but they have so much talent.” Pacheco said especially about Perez and Cantu. “It helps me knowing they have my back and that they can kill the ball as well. I just wanted to keep swinging and hitting the spots on the floor.”
