Mustangs survive late scare to beat Bulldogs

In a simulation, the odds of a 4-1 team beating a 1-4 team would overwhelming favor the proven squad. That is, of course, until one critical variable is accounted for: are the teams rivals?

That was precisely the case when the McAllen High Bulldogs and McAllen Memorial Mustangs squared off in their District 15-5A DI showdown Friday — a game featuring three lead changes, missed extra-point attempts, two-point conversions, an interception, fumble and a recovered onside kick — almost all of it during the final quarter of play.

When it was all said and done, the outcome fared as one would have predicted, with the Mustangs winning, but not without some dramatics down the stretch as Memorial hung on for a 32-29 victory at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“My big speech to the kids all week was, records and stats are all out the window when you play a rival school, and that was true tonight,” Mustangs coach Moses Patterson said.

“We’ve been in this rivalry where we’ve been up (as far as team records go), and we’ve been on it where they’ve been up. It’s a good ol’ fashioned rivalry.”

A fourth lead change was very much in play with one minute remaining, after the Bulldogs scored a touchdown, converted the two-point attempt and recovered an onside kick, which they used one play later to advance to the opposing 38-yard line, needing only a field goal to tie matters.

That’s when Ayden Stauffer intercepted McHi quarterback Joaquin Valdez with 14 seconds remaining as the Mustangs (5-1 overall, 3-0 in district) secured their third consecutive victory.

“Coach (Patrick) Shelby had his kids ready to play tonight,” Patterson said. “Kind of threw everything at us. We were fortunate to persevere and be able to come out with a win.”

All told, it was one of the better performances of the year for a 1-5 Bulldogs squad the faces an uphill battle with a 1-2 district record now. They scored first but wound up yielding the next three touchdowns — each PAT missed, drawing the unusual score of 18-7 in favor of the Mustangs.

They responded by scoring three straight times themselves, though two of those were field goals. Still, the latter of those scores put the Bulldogs ahead 21-18 with 11:05 to play after Andres Garza’s 2-yard TD run and a two-point conversion from Valdez to Finn Hernandez.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 3 in the latest RGVSports.com 6A/5A Top 10 poll, responded with Kane Coy’s second TD pass of the night — and perhaps just as importantly their first successful extra-point kick. JP Garza then scored on a 27-run, giving Memorial a 32-21 lead with 1:43 left.

Valdez responded with a 2-yard TD to Cinco Jones with 43 seconds remaining, before finding Joseph Rivas in the end zone for a two-point conversion to bring it within 32-29. But McHi was unable to complete the comeback after the Stauffer interception, the second turnover of the half for the Bulldogs.

“McHi came out fired up, ready to complete, and we answered the call late,” Patterson said. “But we did answer the call.”

He added: “Proud of where this team is going. The ability to overcome some things and move past it, get it out of their mind, that kind of proactiveness is going to help carry us the rest of the season.”

Up next, Memorial takes on La Joya Juarez-Lincoln on Thursday, while McHi looks to avoid a three-game skid when it faces La Joya Palmview the following day.

Thunderstruck: Yellow Jackets take down rival Tigers

EDCOUCH — There were fireworks before, during and after Edcouch-Elsa’s 21-7 win over rival Mercedes on Friday at Bennie Layton Sr. Memorial Stadium in Edcouch.

Fireworks went off as the National Anthem played before kickoff and fireworks went off again after the Yellow Jackets’ secured their second-straight rivalry win over the Tigers. The fireworks during the game, however, came in the form of the Edcouch-Elsa’s “Thunder Defense” lighting up ball-carriers to set the tone for the 48-minute rivalry game and District 16-5A DII opening victory against Mercedes.

It was the 75th meeting between the rival Yellow Jackets and Tigers and Edcouch-Elsa’s second-straight victory in the series.

“Well it was a big victory for us. We knew Mercedes offensively was stout, fast, explosive, and I think we did a real good job of keeping them down and keeping them bottled up,” Edcouch-Elsa head coach Victor Cardenas said. “It wasn’t until the fourth quarter they got one there at the end, but defensively, they did what they were supposed to do and we’re real proud of our boys for fighting for four quarters.”

Edcouch-Elsa was locked in defensively and kept the pressure on Mercedes with its pass rush and by shutting down the run. The Yellow Jackets forced the Tigers to play sideline to sideline and the Edcouch-Elsa linebackers were there to meet them head on every time.

Senior linebacker Matthew Cano led the Yellow Jackets with three sacks, one fumble recovery and also came down with a big catch during the opening quarter to set up Edcouch-Elsa’s first touchdown — a 35-yard scamper from running back Aydan Garcia for a 7-0 lead with 2:30 to go in the first.

“Our defense is our strength. We got 10 seniors there so we’re expected to lay the wood,” Cano said. “It feels great to get a win (against Mercedes) because we’re the biggest Valley rivalry in 5A.”

Edcouch-Elsa quarterback Elijah Treviño put his team up 14-0 before the break with a 28-yard touchdown run and running back Ayden Mercado pushed the lead to 21-0 with a 12-yard touchdown run up the gut midway through the third quarter.

Mercedes finally got on the scoreboard with a 33-yard touchdown run from running back Robert Sanchez with 10:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, then the Tigers recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff in hopes of a comeback.

The Yellow Jackets’ defense was there again, however, as defensive back Nathan Amaya intercepted a deep pass to give Edcouch-Elsa the ball and an opportunity to kill clock.

“We knew we needed this game. We knew if we won this game we can be right there for the district championship,” Treviño said. “These past two weeks we came up with a gameplan. Our defense did amazing and our offense went out there and executed. These guys, my teammates, did amazing.”

Edcouch-Elsa now shifts its focus to next week’s District 16-5A DII matchup against Brownsville Porter (0-6, 0-1) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Mercedes, meanwhile, will have a chance to bounce back against Brownsville Lopez (5-1, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes.

Rattlers grind out win over Patriots in 15-5A DII opener

It might not have been pretty, but the Sharyland High Rattlers dug deep and scored twice late to grind out a 30-20 win over Mission Veterans in their District 15-5A DII opener Thursday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

“Mission Vets is a great team and has got a great coaching staff. Kids played hard all the way until the end and we were just fortunate enough to make a couple plays there at the end and get the lead and then extend it,” Sharyland head coach Craig Krell said.

The Rattlers (4-3, 1-0) started the game rolling on all cylinders and built a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter after a pair of short touchdown runs from Santiago Longoria and a safety caused by a low snap on a punt in the Patriots’ end zone.

Then, the Sharyland offense stalled.

Mission Veterans (1-6, 0-1) fought its way back into the game by riding its running game of Ben Martinez and Alejandro Garza and defense spearheaded by linebacker Aiden Uribe.

Uribe ended one Sharyland drive with a pick at the goal line during the second quarter, defensive back Nathan Rodriguez came up with an interception on a last second heave to end the first half, and defensive back Quinten Valverde returned a third quarter interception for a Patriots’ touchdown to give Mission Veterans a 20-16 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Rattlers, who had success moving the ball all night but collapsed a couple times over midfield, finally broke through when they needed it most.

Facing a 4th-and-goal at the Mission Veterans 22-yard line, Sharyland quarterback Calvin Harris dropped back and looked off safeties to his right before throwing a dart to split the two-deep coverage to receiver Bruno Cavazos, who out-muscled a pair of Patriots’ defenders to get into the end zone to take a 23-20 lead with 4:30 left in the fourth.

“I knew we needed a play to happen and I’m just thankful my team supports me,” Cavazos said. “It wasn’t the prettiest win but in the end we finished and did a good job as a team.”

“You just have to slow everything down and make it your own game,” Harris said about the game-winner to Cavazos. “Bruno is one of our guys so I knew he could catch that.”

Mission Veterans had one last chance pinned at their own 3-yard line before a turnover on downs ended their hopes and led to a 3-yard touchdown run from Sharyland’s Abram Carrasco for the final 30-20 margin.

Mission Veterans’ two offensive touchdowns came off an 18-yard touchdown run from Garza in the second quarter and a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cameron Sarinana to receiver Jordan Rodriguez, which made it 16-13 early in the third quarter.

Next for Sharyland is a matchup against Alice (3-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in Alice.

Mission Veterans enters its bye week and will return to district action on Friday, Oct. 25 versus Alice in Alice.

Bears show versatility in district-opening win over Bobcats

Through the first half of the season, PSJA High fielded one of the best aerial attacks in the Valley. Nearly three-quarters of its offense came in that fashion, which is why it came as little surprise to coach Lupe Rodriguez that teams would begin to force the Bears to demonstrate a little more versatility.
That’s precisely what happened Thursday, as PSJA High scored two of its four touchdowns on the ground en route to a 28-6 victory over Edinburg High in both teams’ District 31-6A opener at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

Quarterback Myles Lopez accounted for three touchdowns, including one on the ground, as the Bears (4-2 overall, 1-0 in district) opened a 21-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
“Myles did a great job of taking care of the football, taking what they give him, just being patient tonight,” Rodriguez said. “He found open receivers and he ran the ball whenever he needed to.
“A lot of teams drop a lot of defenders back and try to take away the pass. So we’ve got to complement that with our runs and force teams to play us.”

Leading up to Thursday’s matchup, PSJA had averaged 323.8 rushing yards per contest and 95.2 yards passing. Trying to strike the right balance has not come without its challenges, given injuries. With Jorge Alanis — the team leader in carries and rushing yards despite sitting out the previous game due to a shoulder injury — sidelined, the Bears turned to another formidable back in Gabriel Ramirez to step in.
Ramirez scored twice during the opening quarter — first on a 4-yard pass from Lopez to make it 14-0, then on a 6-yard run for a 21-6 cushion.
Two scoreless quarters followed before Lopez connected with Aleksander Flores on a 7-yard touchdown for the final margin.
It was a decisive showing for the reigning district champion Bears, who lost to Brownsville Veterans 35-23 in their previous outing before a league-wide bye ahead of the district opener. Following the loss, PSJA dropped from No. 3 to No. 7 in the RGVSports.com Top 10 6A/5A poll.

Rodriguez was encouraged his defense held the opposition scoreless for the third time this season. In fact, the only touchdown the Bears allowed Thursday came on an 89-yard return from Oscar Jasso in which the sophomore running back found the end zone seemingly untouched.
“Defensively, they had a lot to prove, giving up a lot of yardage (lately),” said Rodriguez, whose team yielded a combined 59 points the previous two games. “They were playing with a chip on their shoulder.”
PSJA faces Edinburg Economedes in another short week next week, before taking on Weslaco High, Edinburg North and La Joya High, respectively.
Edinburg (3-3, 0-1), which lost 38-14 to Los Fresnos in Week 5, looks to avoid a three-game skid next week when it takes on La Joya High. Remaining on its district schedule is Edinburg Economedes, Weslaco High and Edinburg North, respectively.

Statement Made: No. 4 Chargers rout No. 7 Cardinals in GOTW

BROWNSVILLE — The Brownsville Veterans Chargers heard all the chatter this offseason. Despite a run to the Class 5A DI state semifinals, many outside the program expected a drop-off by the Chargers after realignment moved them up to the Class 6A level.

A 2-2 start to the season only added fuel to the fire, with more writing off the Chargers just four games into the season.

If back-to-back wins to close out non-district play was enough to silence the doubters, Thursday’s performance might be, with the No. 4 Chargers thrashing the No. 7 Harlingen High Cardinals 40-9 in their District 32-6A opener and the RGVSports.com Game of the Week at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

“I’m extremely proud of our kiddos,” Brownsville Veteran head coach JC Ramirez said. “We had a great week of practice. We knew this game was big for us. Since we got classified as 6A and the schedule was released, we knew this was a tough matchup. Not only because it was the Harlingen Cardinals, the powerhouse of the Valley and everyone wants to be them. Not only that but it was our first game in 32-6A. We have very realistic goals. This was step one of meeting one of our goals to capture a gold ball in 32-6A.”

The Chargers jumped out on the Cardinals during the opening quarter, taking a 10-0 advantage behind a 23-yard field goal by senior Roman Reyna and a 39-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Cesar Belmontes.

A 44-yard field goal by Reyna added to the Chargers lead, going up 13-0 with 9:47 remaining.

The Cardinals answered back with a 62-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Hassan Woolery with 8:15 remaining in the opening half, putting the Cardinals within six points heading into the break.

Woolery left the game later in the second quarter due to an injury and did not return. He finished with a team-high 92 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.

“The first two quarters we were trying to figure out the defense and see what they do,” Belmontes said. “Coming out of halftime we said we were going to play smashmouth football like we always do.”

Brownsville Veterans did just what Belmontes said on its opening drive of the third quarter, chewing up three minutes of clock on a five-play, 54-yard scoring drive capped by a seven-yard touchdown run by the senior fullback.

The scoring drive was the first off three by the Chargers during the third quarter, adding two more touchdowns on runs of 34- and 3-yards by senior quarterback Storm Montoya.

The defense matched its offense with a dominant performance during the third, forcing a pair of three-and-outs during the period and allowing -9 yards.

Brownsville Veterans finished with 336 total yards, with nearly half of them coming during the second half when they outscored the Cardinals 27-2. Trevillion paced the way with 100 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries. Belmontes added 89 yards and two scores on 12 carries, while Montoya chipped in 55 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.

The defense allowed just 211 total yards, including just 49 during the final two quarters. Brownsville Veterans fullback Alvin Trevillion put the final touches on the win with a two-yard touchdown run during the fourth, securing the Chargers first win over Harlingen High in school history.

“This whole week we’ve been training hard,” Belmontes said. “Ever since Saturday we’ve had the mentality that we’re going to come out here and make a statement. Class 6A football is a whole different level. We just came out here tonight and made a big statement.”

The Cardinals (4-3, 0-1) get a week to recover following the district loss before returning to 32-6A action against Brownsville Hanna at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen.

Meanwhile, the victory moves the Chargers to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in their return to District 32-6A. They’ll continue their quest for the school’s first district title at the 6A level against Brownsville Hanna, taking on the Eagles at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

Rivals Edcouch-Elsa, Mercedes meet in 16-5A DII opener

EDCOUCH Bitter rivals Edcouch-Elsa and Mercedes have met 72 times, with the Tigers holding a 37-34-1 advantage over the Yellow Jackets in head-to-head meetings.

The 73rd matchup between the Tigers and Yellow Jackets, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Bennie Layton Memorial Stadium, will be another battle for bragging rights while also giving the winner an early lead in the District 16-5A DII title race as league play kicks off Friday night.

Edcouch-Elsa (3-2) won the latest edition of the rivalry with a 28-19 victory at home in 2023, ending a nine-game losing streak against Mercedes. “La Maquina Amarilla” will be looking to start its own streak in the rivalry by stringing together a second straight win over the Tigers in 2024.

The Yellow Jackets started the season 3-0 before dropping their past two games by one possession each against Edinburg High and Port Isabel. Edcouch-Elsa’s “Thunder Defense” has been a stingy unit all year, led by linebackers Troy Barco (70 tackles, 13 tackles for loss), Matthew Cano (53 tackles, two sacks) and defensive end Gaven Rodriguez (56 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, six sacks), while defensive backs Brandon Ibarra and Israel Campos have combined for seven interceptions between them. The Yellow Jackets have allowed 14.6 points per game and averaged 20.6 points per game offensively.

Mercedes, meanwhile, is coming off its highest scoring output of the season after a 56-40 loss against Sharyland High in Week 5. The Tigers (3-2) put together three straight wins from Weeks 2-4, averaging 476.4 yards per game and scoring 28.4 points per game. Mercedes also is giving up 23.8 points per game.

The Tigers have deployed a two-quarterback system this season and both senior Aaron Cortez and junior Diego Bravo have delivered. Cortez is completing 69% of his passes for 535 yards and one touchdown with 185 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Bravo has thrown for 377 yards and three touchdowns, adding 384 yards and two rushing touchdowns on the ground.

While the two signal-callers have seen success this season, junior running back Robert Sanchez has been the motor of the offense with 703 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 75 carries. He also ranks second on the team in receiving with 12 receptions for 166 yards and three touchdowns.

Mid-Valley football fans are in for fireworks as the two rivals and District 16-5A DII championship hopefuls clash Friday night in Edcouch. Four more District 16-5A DII teams also have their sights set on competing for a district title as they kickoff district play across the Valley.

DISTRICT 16-5A DII: BROWNSVILLE LOPEZ AT PSJA SOUTHWEST

The District 16-5A DII action continues as the Brownsville Lopez Lobos (4-1) visit the PSJA Southwest Javelinas (1-4) at 7 p.m. today at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

Lopez has been a bright spot this season by putting together the program’s best start since 2017, when the Lobos finished 8-3.

The Lobos have been putting up points in bunches behind the connection of quarterback Lupe Ramirez (1,212 passing yards, 17 touchdowns) and receiver Gabriel Rios (28 receptions, 511 yards, nine touchdowns). They’ve helped score 31.6 points per game, and the team allows 19.2 points defensively.

Southwest’s lone victory this season came on a last-second 29-yard Hail Mary from quarterback Joshua Jorge to AJ Arevalo that lifted the Javelinas to a 35-31 win Sept. 5. Southwest has dropped three straight since but is looking to start district play on a positive note.

DISTRICT 16-5A DII: BROWNSVILLE PORTER AT BROWNSVILLE PACE

Brownsville Pace began the season on fire with a 4-0 record before falling to a tough Roma team in Week 5. The Vikings (4-1) are now coming off their bye week and looking to resume their winning ways as they open district play against the rival Porter Cowboys.

Pace running back Adrian Sauceda has surged his way to the top of the RGV rushing leaderboard with 1,078 yards and 13 touchdowns on 125 carries for an average of 8.6 yards per rush. His ability to carry the load offensively has opened up opportunities in the air for quarterback Isaac Solis (685 passing yards, nine touchdowns) and receivers Ricky Martinez (10 receptions, 155 yards, three touchdowns) and David Melendez (21 receptions, 274 yards, five touchdowns).

Porter (0-5) played tough during non-district games against Grulla and Santa Rosa but the Cowboys will have their work cut out for them against a solid Pace squad. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.

McHi boys, girls sweep 31-5A team championships

McALLEN — McAllen High’s girls cross country team felt like it was the best team in the Valley last season. The Bulldogs were one of two RGV teams to make it to the UIL state cross country championships last year, finishing ninth in the Class 5A overall team standings.

Still, one thing was missing from the Bulldogs 2023 resume – a district championship.

One year after finishing as the District 31-5A runner-up, the Bulldogs made sure to take what they felt was theirs Thursday, dominating the competition en route to the district crown at SpringFest Park in McAllen.

McAllen High finished as the overall team champion with 21 points, over 50 points ahead of the next closest team.

“It feels really great,” McAllen High senior Dana Rojas Vasquez said. “Last year, we just weren’t prepared. When things like that happen, we didn’t deserve it. We didn’t deserve it last year. We worked really hard to get here. We came together as a team, and I think we’re prepared to go to state and maybe compete for the title. I think it means a lot to us to get here and win after last year. We just knew we were the best team in the Valley. We just didn’t perform that day. Today was about competing and giving our best.”

Rojas Vasquez paced the way for the Bulldogs on Wednesday, cruising to her second straight individual 31-5A title with a personal best time of 17 minutes, 18.8 seconds.

Her time was over 30 seconds faster than the next competitor and marked the sixth time she’s broken the sub-18 barrier in her career.

“It was a great race honestly,” Rojas Vasquez said. “It was a fast course, and I think my team did really good. I think we all hit PRs. I’m just grateful to God for everything to this point. This is where I started my freshman year. I ran here for my first district meet and I got 13th place. So, now being a district champ, it feels really great to finish my senior season here.”

Fellow Bulldogs distance runner Kenzi Ramirez followed Rojas Vasquez to the finish line, coming in second with a personal best time of 17:51.5.

Ramirez’s sub-18 time made her just the seventh RGV female athlete to break the barrier according to RGV track and field historian Carlos Vela.

Sophia Simpson, Samara Gully and Aileen Rivera each added top 10 finishes for the Bulldogs on Thursday, coming in fifth (18:40.5), sixth (19:01.1) and seventh (19:13.5), respectively.

Lily Mendez and Ava Barreda also competed for the Bulldogs, finishing 17th and 20th with times of 20:23.2 and 20:34.3, respectively. Only the top five runners for each team count towards the overall scores.

“I think this meet is going to give us a lot of confidence going into regionals and getting to state,” Rojas Vasquez said. “Like I said, we support each other not only on the track but also outside the track. We know we’re a great team, but we know we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We have to stay focused and get to our goals.”

The Bulldogs were equally dominant in the boys division, with all seven of their runners finishing in the top 15, including five inside the top 10. No other boys team had more than two.

Solomon Lazo and Jacksen Ahlman led McHi to their second-straight district title, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Lazo clocked in at 15:39.8 and Ahlman came in at 15:42.1.

Aidan De Leon, Jack Gurwitz and Sergio Echavarria finished in seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively, with Sean Smith and Joseph Rodriguez adding 11th and 13th place finishes.

While the Bulldogs claimed the team title, the individual champion came from Sharyland High, with senior Nathan Salinas taking home the crown with a time of 15:17.8.

The district title marked the first of his career, while also coming after an injury his junior season.

“It feels great,” Salinas said. “The course was a little muddy, but I prevailed. I was just trying to run today more tactically and not burn out. I had done that in a couple of my races. I made a move with about 1.7 miles to go and just held on. I just felt like I had a lot to give in that last mile. I didn’t want to surge for placement in the beginning, so I just kept my cool.”

Over at the District 30-5A meet, a pair of RGV athletes swept the individual titles, while Laredo Nixon took home both the boys and girls team championships.

La Joya Palmview’s Dolores Ramirez won the 30-5A girls title with ease, finishing roughly 15 seconds faster than the next runner. Ramirez clocked in at 17:57.4, with four Laredo Nixon runners following.

Palmview finished second in the team standings behind Ramirez’s performance, earning a spot in the Region IV Cross Country Championships in two weeks.

Meanwhile, Mission High’s Josue Cisneros took home the boys crown with a time of 15:44.0, while teammate Ryan Aguirre added another top five finish, coming in fourth with a time of 16:08.2.

The Mission High duo helped the Eagles to a second-place finish in the team standings, securing a spot the regional meet.

The Region IV Cross Country Championships are slated for Oct. 21-22 at the Duggan Track and Soccer Stadium in Corpus Christi.

The top three teams and 10 individuals from each district meet advance to the regional meet.

6A Football Notebook: Valley 6A districts kick off league play

Non-district play officially is in the books for the Valley’s 6A football teams, with teams gearing up for the road to the playoffs.

District 31-6A is coming off a league-wide bye week in Week 6, meaning every team should be fresh coming into the start of league play.

Meanwhile, the five-team District 32-6A wrapped up non-district play last week and is jumping right into league action.

NO. 7 HARLINGEN HIGH AT NO. 4 BROWNSVILLE VETERANS: Arguably the biggest Class 6A game in the Valley takes place Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium, with the No. 4 Chargers hosting the No. 7 Cardinals.

The 6A titans enter the District 32-6A opener with identical 4-2 overall records after six weeks of non-district play, each picking up their share of convincing wins.

The Chargers sat at 2-2 through their first four games, picking up wins over PSJA Memorial (34-3) and Rio Grande City (49-10), dropping contests to Brownsville St. Joseph (41-21) and Laredo Alexander (44-42).

They’ve put in their best performances over the past two weeks, taking down No. 5 PSJA High 35-23 in Week 5, followed by a dominant 45-21 win over Sharyland Pioneer last week.

Fullback Alvin Trevillion has come on strong the past two contests, racking up 343 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries during that span.

The Cardinals opened their season up with back-to-back wins over Weslaco High (42-28) and Harlingen South (29-24) before dropping their first game of the season in Week 3 to No. 2 Edinburg Vela 34-16.

Harlingen High bounced back strong after its first loss, defeating Laredo United South (6-5) and Mission Veterans (38-8) to improve to 4-1. A loss to Cuero in Week 6 dropped the Cardinals to 4-2 to close out non-district play.

While Harlingen High running back Noah Huerta (102 carries, 738 yards, nine touchdowns) remains the focal point of the offense, the Cardinals will look to first-year quarterback Hassan Woolery to get up to speed fast as they kick off district play, with the freshman taking over as the starter last week after an injury to senior Jonas Serna.

Woolery put together a promising performance during his first varsity start despite the loss, throwing for 54 yards on 4-of-9 passing and adding 80 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Kickoff for the RGVSports.com Week 6 Game of the Week between the Cardinals and Chargers is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium.

NO. 5 PSJA HIGH at EDINBURG HIGH: Like in 32-6A, District 31-6A play kicks off with a banger between the reigning league champion Bears and the playoff contender Bobcats.

The Bears and Bobcats enter the contest with 3-2 marks after the bye week, two of four teams in the district with the same record.

PSJA High’s passing attack has been among the best in the RGV this season, averaging 323.8 yards per game. The Bears’ aerial assault is complemented by a running game averaging 95.2 yards per game, forcing defenses to defend against both.

Quarterback Myles Lopez and wideout Ryan Vallejo pace the Bears’ passing game, with Lopez averaging ranking third in the RGV in passing yards (1,619) and Vallejo ranking second in receiving (655).

Running back Jorge Alanis leads the Bears in rushing with 283 yards and one touchdown on 50 carries. The senior did miss PSJA High’s last non-district contest due to injury, leaving his status for Thursday unsure. Senior Gabriel Ramirez (25 carries, 108 yards, one touchdown) likely will step into the lead back role if Alanis is unable to go.

Meanwhile, the Bobcats have deployed a more balanced attack through five games this season, averaging 117.4 passing yards and 142.2 rushing yards this year.

Senior JT Santa Maria and sophomore Aidden Sanchez have split the reps at quarterback this season, combining for 571 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

Sophomore running back Oscar Jasso has paced the Bobcats’ ground game, toting the rock 66 times for 282 yards and two touchdowns. Santa Maria also offers a weapon in the Bobcats’ ground game, ranking second on the team in rushing with 273 yards and four touchdowns on 46 carries.

Kickoff between the Bears and Bobcats is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

WESLACO HIGH AT LA JOYA HIGH: Realignment sent the Panthers from District 32-6A last year to District 31-6A this year. They’ll make their league debut at 7 p.m. Thursday at La Joya ISD Stadium against the Coyotes.

Weslaco High enters district play as one of the hottest teams in the area, winning three straight after an 0-2 start to the season. The emergence of new faces at quarterback, running back and receiver have been key to the Panthers’ turnaround.

Senior Franky Trevino, who stepped into the QB1 role this season after playing receiver last year, has emerged as a dual threat behind center, throwing for 613 yards and seven touchdowns and adding 337 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Receiver Chris Luna has helped Trevino’s transition to the quarterback position, serving as his primary target out wide this year. The junior is a big-play threat every time he touches the ball, averaging 21.7 yards per catch en route to 413 yards and five touchdowns.

Junior running back David Garcia was left big shoes to fill after the graduation of Eli Rodriguez, The Monitor’s 2023 All-Area Player of the Year. He’s done his best to fill that void, rushing for 441 yards and five touchdowns through five games this year, including three games with more than 100 yards.

Though winless through five games, the Coyotes aren’t to be taken lightly by the Panthers during their district opener, with La Joya High fielding one of the top rushers in the RGV in Mauricio Mendoza.

The junior running back ranks third in the Valley in rushing with 786 yards and six touchdowns on 123 carries through five games.

Left, Edinburg Economedes quarterback Jon Carreon. (Delcia Lopez | The Monitor); Right, Edinburg North athlete Aaron Campos. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports)

EDINBURG NORTH AT EDINBURG ECONOMEDES: The Cougars have had the Jaguars’ number the past eight years, with Edinburg North winning eight straight games against their crosstown rival.

The Jaguars‘ last win over the Cougars came during the 2015 season, with Economedes beating Edinburg North 35-28.

The Jaguars might have the team to snap their losing streak to the Cougars this year, with Economedes off to its best start since 2016.

Their 3-2 record is already more wins than the past two years combined, with a win against Edinburg North tying for their best season since 2018, when they finished 4-6.

Taking down the Cougars won’t be a cakewalk, with Edinburg North fresh off a dominating win over PSJA Southwest.

Kickoff between the Cougars (2-3) and Jaguars (3-2) is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

BROWNSVILLE HANNA AT SAN BENITO: The final 6A contest in the RGV pits a pair of struggling programs head-to-head as the Eagles travel to Bobby Lackey Stadium to take on the winless Greyhounds.

San Benito enters the game without a win this season after playing arguably the toughest non-district slate of anyone in the area.

The Greyhounds opened the season against RGVSports.com 5A/6A’s top-ranked team, the PSJA North Raiders, followed by a game against 6A powerhouse Austin Westlake and perennial playoff contender Laredo United. Losses to UANL Monterrey (28-21), No. 8 Weslaco High (28-14) and Carthage (56-0) ended San Benito’s non-district slate with a 0-6 mark.

On the opposite side, Brownsville Hanna enters the District 32-6A opener with just one win under its belt. The Eagles opened the year with four straight losses before picking up their first win of the season in Week 5, a 13-3 victory over La Joya High.

They closed out their non-district slate with a loss to Mission Veterans last week, dropping to 1-5 on the year.

Kickoff between the Greyhounds and Eagles is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito.

Lions Roar: La Feria boys and girls teams sweep individual, team district titles

LA FERIA —La Feria’s boys and girls’ cross country programs have been the standard of excellence over the past several years. The Lionettes have strung off seven straight team district titles since 2017, while the Lions have won four straight since 2020.

Both programs continued to establish themselves as the premier cross country programs in the RGV, with La Feria sweeping the District 32-4A team and individual titles Wednesday at La Feria High School.

“I’ve been here multiple times,” La Feria senior Cierra Garcia said. “My mom came to this school and ran at this school. I know how this school and running have come along. That’s why I’m here, doing what my parents did. It pushed me to be here as well. Being able to continue this tradition and keep it going, it is amazing.”

“We’ve cemented a legacy already,” La Feria junior Armando Morales said. “We just want to keep going. We want to be known as the best team in the Valley to ever do it. We want to win everything so we’re able to cement ourselves as the best.”

Leading the pack for the Lionettes this season is senior Cierra Garcia, a four-year letter winner for La Feria.

Garcia, who finished in the top five at the district meet during each of her last three years, cruised to her first career district title, finishing over 30 seconds faster than the next competitor.

The senior distance runner clocked in at 12 minutes during the 2-mile run, making her the seventh straight individual district champion for the Lionettes.

“It feels great (winning the district title),” Garcia said. “I know as soon as last year’s runners left; I had big shoes to fill in. I knew when I came in this year, I had to give my hardest. I didn’t want to disappoint and if I did, I knew I had to work harder. It felt nice to be able to fulfill that dream that my coach has that is still going on to this day.”

Garcia was one of four La Feria girls runners to finish in the top five, with Mia Cerda (12:36.8) and Ximena Garcia (12:45.8) coming in second and third, respectively, while Emma Elizondo came in fifth (13:31.3)

Hannah Miranda rounded out the Lionettes top five runners, coming in 11th overall with a time of 14:14.5.

La Feria finished the meet with 22 total points, nearly 40 points away from the next closest team. Hidalgo finished second in the overall standings with 61 points, followed by Grulla in third with 87 points.

La Feria’s boys team followed up the girls with an impressive showing of its own, with their junior trio of Anthony Morales, Armando Morales and Nathan Salinas claiming the top three spots.

Anthony (16:02.1) and Armando (16:12.5), who were running their first race in over a month due to injury, cruised to first and second place, respectively, with Salinas coming in third (16:34.0).

“It really motivates me running with them (Anthony and Armando),” Salinas said. “It is hard for me to pace myself. So, when I go out the first mile I always go to fast and burn out. When these guys are here, it is really easy to pace myself and do good. We’ve been running with each other since eighth grade year. They’ve always been the faster ones, but I’m slowly bridging that gap.”

The individual title by Anthony marked the second of his career, also winning it in 2022. His brother, Armando, claimed the individual crown in 2023.

“It sucks being injured and stuff like that, but it really motivated us,” Anthony said. “It made us hungrier for the postseason. Our mental state, we were down and stuff, but we know we’d be back and go from there.”

All seven of the Lions runners finished in the top 25 during the district meet, with Andrew Cantu coming in seventh (17:49.1), Estefano De Leon coming in 10th (18:21.0), Jake Vela coming in 12th (18:49.2) and Eahden Bocanegra (19:27.8) coming in 24th.

The Lions finished with 23 points overall to claim their fifth straight district title. Hidalgo came in second in the overall standings with 56 points, followed by Port Isabel with 60 points.

Over in District 32-5A, Weslaco East pulled off a sweep of their own, with both the boys and girls teams lifting the overall team championships at the end of the meet.

In the girls division, a trio of Weslaco East runners finished in the top 10 to carry the Wildcats to the team championship, highlighted by a second-place finish by senior Andrea Quintero (19:41.1). Mattie Castillo (19:58.9) and Tea Martinez (20:06.7) came in third and fourth, respectively, with Gloria Gonzalez finishing ninth with a time of 21:13.2.

The Wildcats finished with 32 points to claim the team championship. Harlingen South came in second with 42 points, highlighted by Jessica De Leon’s first-place finish. Edcouch-Elsa finished third with 76 points.

In the boys division, Weslaco East racked up 34 total points en route to the team championship, with their top five runners all finishing inside the top 15.

Siblings Aaron and Alexander Nava led the Wildcats to the team title, coming in second and third, respectively. Adrianno Gonzalez added a sixth-place finish, with Octavian De La Serna and Aron Martinez coming in 11th and 12th, respectively.

Donna High secured a spot at the Region IV Cross Country Championships in two weeks with a second place finish in the team standings, earning 56 points in the win. Meanwhile, Edcouch-Elsa junior Juan Manuel Aguinaga Jr. earned his second straight individual district title to help the Yellow Jackets finish third in the team standings and earn a spot at the regional meet.

The top three teams from each district meet and top 10 individual earn spots at Region IV Cross Country Championships slated for Oct. 21-22 at the Dugan Track and Soccer Stadium in Corpus Christi.

QBs Cisneros, Pineda share co-player of week honors

Two RGV football teams eclipsed the 60-point mark this past week, with Brownsville St. Joseph beating down La Feria 62-13 and Los Fresnos routing Sharyland High 70-33.

Leading the offensive explosions were a pair of dual-threat quarterbacks in the Bloodhounds’ Gavin Cisneros and the Falcons’ Robert Pineda.

The pair of junior quarterbacks are the RGVSports.com Week 6 Co-Players of the Week.

Cisneros’ arm talent and explosiveness on the ground was on full display against the Lions, as he racked up 498 total yards and seven total touchdowns during the win.

He diced up the defense through the air for 300 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-25 completions, a season-high for the gunslinger.

Cisneros also slashed his way through the defense with his legs, averaging 19.8 yards per carry en route to 198 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The Bloodhounds finished the game with a school-record 709 total yards.

Cisneros and the Bloodhounds will look to close out their non-district slate with a third straight win, taking on the Port Isabel Tarpons (6-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Canales Field in Brownsville.

Pineda put together a masterclass of his own during the RGVSports.com Game of the Week against Sharyland High, exploding for 389 total yards and eight total touchdowns in the win.

The third-year starter was surgical through the air, completing 11-of-14 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. He did his best work on the ground, however, eluding defenders play after play on his way to a monster 217 yards and six touchdowns on 15 carries.

His performance vaulted him into the top five in passing and rushing in the RGV heading into Week 7, as he has thrown for 1,028 yards and 10 touchdowns, and added 766 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground.

The Falcons enter their bye week with a 5-1 mark, only losing to PSJA High during Week 4. They’ll jump into 32-6A action after their off week, taking on the San Benito Greyhounds (0-6) at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium in Los Fresnos.
