In a league of her own: Angela Villarreal is RGVSports.com’s All-Valley Player of the Year

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

When Angela Villarreal is congratulated on winning the award, she pauses and does some thinking.

“Wait, which one?” she asks.

Villarreal is not being ostentatious or arrogant. The question is legitimate and earnest. The senior for the Weslaco High Lady Panthers has won so many individual honors for her play on the hardwood this season it’s hard to keep track of them all.

In addition to winning RGVSports.com’s All-Valley Player of the Year for girls basketball, Villarreal has been pegged as the District 31-6A MVP as well as All-Valley MVP by the RGV Basketball Coaches Association. Among other accolades, she’s also received recognition from the Texas High School Basketball Coaches Association, where she’s included on the All-Region team.

“It’s been an honor to have all of that,” Villarreal said. “I made a lot of those awards goals I wanted to achieve. Last year, I was able to achieve a lot of things as a junior, but, for senior year, I was hoping to get more. I strive to get more every year.”

The litany of personal prestige has been a long time coming for Villarreal, who concludes her high school basketball career as one of the Valley’s most celebrated athletes. Though the 2014-15 season featured a bevy of talented players, none were revered by opposing coaches and players in the manner Villarreal was.

Lady Panthers coach Griselda Fino knew Villarreal’s talents were apparent from the get-go. During an open gym in 2010, when Villarreal was in eighth grade, Fino saw an otherwise shy girl transform once the ball was in her hands.

“She spent like, an hour pretending to tie her shoes. I couldn’t get her on the court,” Fino said. “I think she was intimidated by some of the taller girls. But, once she got on the court, I knew immediately how good she was going to be. She was so fast, but she was also fast with the ball. She already had such control of the ball.”

Villarreal assumed starting responsibilities midway through her freshman year, and recalls the steep learning curve of playing for Fino at the varsity level.

“I was scared to even drive to the basket,” Villarreal said. “I was just scared I was going to mess up. I felt like I wasn’t as good. During the playoffs, (coach Fino) came up to me towards the end of the game and was like, ‘You’re not in middle school anymore. You have to play.’”

It was easy for Villarreal to grow complacent on the court during her first two seasons. The Lady Panthers were deep with talent and ran a post-heavy offense through Laura Van Tilberg, who graduated a season ago. However, after Van Tilburg suffered a torn ACL during a bi-district playoff game during Villarreal’s sophomore year, Weslaco’s offensive focused changed.

“We became a bit more of a guard-oriented team,” Villarreal said. “I had to score more and be more of an impact player. With Laura out, everyone wrote us off, but we still made it to the (regional semi-final round).”
Though Van Tilberg eventually returned to full health, her time away allowed Villarreal to grow accustomed to being the focal point on offense, a role she resumed once more this season.

“This year was a lot of guard work,” Villarreal said. “We didn’t have any height this year. It just had to work that way. We transitioned our offense a lot from sophomore year to now.”

With Villarreal the Lady Panthers’ go-to scoring threat, Fino says opposing teams consistently tried to face-guard Villarreal, knowing that stopping her meant stopping Weslaco. Despite the extra defensive attention, Villarreal averaged 14.8 points with 3.9 assists and 6.4 steals. Behind those numbers, the Lady Panthers went 29-5 during the regular season, and split the District 31-6A championship with PSJA North.

That’s not to say Villarreal’s senior season wasn’t met with disappointment. Though the team aimed for a third-straight trip to the fourth round of the postseason, Weslaco was ousted in the area round after a 53-49 loss to Del Rio.

“We shouldn’t have lost that game,” Villarreal said. “We had the defensive intensity, but we just missed a bunch of easy shots. Of all the nights to have a bad game, we picked the wrong night.”

Though her season ended prematurely, Villarreal will continue her basketball career at UT-RGV next fall. She is the only Valley girls player this season to receive a four-year scholarship to a Division I program.

“I’ve been coaching for nine years, and I really think (Angela) is a once-in-a-lifetime kid,” Fino said. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get someone as good as her. She really is the best player I’ve ever coached.”

RGVSports.com’s All-Valley Girls Basketball Awards: PSJA North’s Randy Bocanegra is Coach of the Year

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

The PSJA North Lady Raiders should have been easy to stop, but went further than any other Valley team this season.

Coach Randy Bocanegra instructed a unit with minimal depth, no interior size and five trigger-happy guards to their first district championship, and was the only UIL Valley girls basketball coach to see his team go three rounds deep in the postseason.

For doing more with less, Bocanegra is awarded the RGVSports.com All-Valley Coach of the Year.
“(The award) is a by-product of my kids’ effort,” Bocanegra said. “Through their hard work, our program gets recognition. We talked about our strengths before the season. We weren’t very tall, but we could be fast, we could press and we could shoot the ball. That’s what we focused on and then everything else fell in place.”

This marks the second time Bocanegra has been given the award, having previously received it after the 2011-12 season when the Lady Raiders made their first trip to the playoffs.

“It tells us that we’re doing the right things,” the sixth-year coach said. “Any time you can get recognition as one of the top programs, or top coaches, it’s very rewarding because you’re placed where other coaches have been.”

PSJA North appeared in the RGVSports.com Top 10 rankings for the duration of the regular season, and ranked as high as No. 1. The team finished with an overall record of 31-5, including a 64-54 win over Weslaco High on Dec. 16 at Weslaco.

“We surprised some teams early and built confidence,” Bocanegra said. “Certainly that win against Weslaco really put us there. We were not only competitive, we were among the better teams.”

RGVSports.com’s All-Valley Girls Basketball Awards: Edinburg High’s Jayla Santa Maria is Newcomer of the Year

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

Jayla Santa Maria of the Edinburg High Lady Bobcats hesitates to answer what should be a simple question.

What position does she play?

“Well, (coach John David Salinas) had me playing everywhere,” the RGVSports.com All-Valley Newcomer of the Year said.

Indeed, Santa Maria’s freshman year stats reflect her productive and multi-faceted season. She led Edinburg in points per game (11.7) and assists (1.7), and was also second in rebounds (7.7) and steals (3.0). Despite her youth, she says expectations were apparent before the season began.

“After school one day, the coaching staff pulled me aside to let me know what they expected of me. They said, ‘You’re going to be our go-to girl this season,” Santa Maria said.

Santa Maria helped the Lady Bobcats to an overall record of 23-13 and a third-place finish in District 31-6A. The team made an appearance during the bi-district round of the playoffs against Brownsville Veterans.

“The nerves hit me right before the game started,” Santa Maria said. “I was like, ‘Woah, this is really happening.”

RGVSports.com’s All-Valley Girls Basketball Awards: Harlingen’s Sami Quilantan is Defensive Player of the Year

BY JON R. LAFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

Harlingen High’s Sami Quilantan led all Valley-girls in steals this season, averaging 7.6 a game. So intense was her level of commitment on the defensive end, her zeal for getting stops sometimes got the best of her.

“I fouled a lot,” Quilantan said. “There were some games I didn’t get to play as much because I was in foul trouble.”

Though the junior’s aggressiveness proved a hindrance at various points during the season, it was that same passion that helped spur the Lady Cardinals to success. The team finished the season 30-5 including an unblemished 14-0 record in District 32-6A.

“I didn’t think of steals as my top priority,” Quilantan said. “But I did it to help the team. I knew if we had the defense, I could just go. The defense would become our offense.”

Aside from winning Defensive Player of the Year from RGVSports.com, Quilantan also received the award from the RGV Basketball Coaches Association and 32-6A All-District.

Aside from her defensive duties, Quilantan also led the Lady Cardinals in scoring, averaging 11.6 points.

Wet weather soaks Donna North relays

BY JON R. LaFOLLETTE | STAFF WRITER

Valley track and field teams competed in three meets last week during a string of wet weather and scattered rain showers. Despite the damp conditions, sprinters, jumpers and throwers alike looked to improve as district competition begins next month.

The soggiest meet was Saturday’s Chief Relays at Donna North High School. All field events were scrapped in addition to hurdle races due to safety concerns. The meet was temporarily postponed as coaches discussed the possibility of cancellation.

“(The coaches) want to continue,” Donna North coach Basilio Mendoza said. “So, let’s roll.”

As seven girls and 11 boys teams competed on the slick track, maneuvering around pockets of standing water, coaches quickly changed their goals for the meet. What was supposed to be a chance to refine talent and scout district foes turned pedestrian.

“We’re just a glorified workout,” McAllen High girls coach Robert Martinez said. “That’s all it is. This isn’t going good for anybody. At this point, we’re just getting in work. This is a work day today.”

The streak of bad weather has made it difficult for teams to practice as well, forcing Martinez and others to motivate their teams despite less than ideal conditions and limited time outside.

“It’s tough. We just have to find ways to keep that fire lit,” Martinez said. “As long as we’re getting work from the kids, we have a fair idea of who can do what in what event.”

The girls of Brownsville Veterans placed first in the team standings with 105 points. Among Upper-Valley girls teams, McAllen Memorial took second (102), McAllen High came in third (36). The Brownsville Rivera boys team won gold with 73.5 points, McAllen Rowe won second (60.5) and Brownsville St. Joseph took third (58).

RIVERA SHOWS STRONG

The most notable individual performance of the weekend came from Edinburg Vela’s Brendon Rivera, a senior high jumper, on Friday at the Rey Ramirez Relays in Rio Grande City. Rivera placed first with a jump of 7 feet, 2 inches, a meet record and the Valley’s best high jump this season. Rivera’s attempt fell one inch shy of tying his personal best, which doubles as the Valley record, set last August at the TAAF Games of Texas.

In addition to Rivera’s prowess on the bar, the Sharyland High boys exhibited their speed in the sprinting events. The duo of James Cole and Sean Landez finished first and second respectively in both the boys 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Cole’s gold medal run in the 100 clocked at 11.37 seconds while his winning time in the 200 was 22.56.

Mission Veterans’ GJ Reyna won first place twice during long-distance runs. Reyna took the 1600-meter run in 4:31.25 and the 3200-meter run with 10:02.88.

TRI CITY SHOWDOWN

The PSJA Tri-City championships were held Thursday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr. PSJA Memorial’s Mike Gonzalez took home a pair of gold medals after winning the boys shot put (43-5) and discus (148-4). Victor Pedraza of PSJA Southwest won the 1600-meter run (4:30.24) and the 3200-meter run (9:58.12).
