BROWNSVILLE — The Brownsville Porter soccer team is off to a fantastic start in District 32-5A.

The Cowgirls are coming off of a 5-0 victory against Brownsville Pace on Tuesday.

“It was a good win, especially when we win at home,” Porter coach Abraham Gracia said. “The girls get really motivated from that. Pace are a good team, and they were missing players as well.”

Porter is 5-0 in district play and has not surrendered a goal yet in district.

“I feel we are doing amazing,” sophomore defender Ebony Garza said. “Our defense is doing great. We are starting to touch the ball a bit more instead of just kicking it up as far as Gracia tells us.”

One area of improvement on which the Cowgirls agree is getting on the ball more.

“We can play so much better than how we are currently playing,” attacking midfielder Keenia Palacios said. “We know we have the potential to pass better and control the ball more. Sometimes we start off bad, but then we build into the game more.”

Porter sits at the top of 32-5A table with 15 points. Brownsville Veterans Memorial and Edcouch-Elsa are close behind in the standings with 12 points apiece.

“Defensively, we have been playing great.” Gracia said. “Our offense is playing good, too. We have been creating a lot of goal-scoring opportunities, but we just need to finish a little bit better.”

One of the wins came from a forfeit because an opponent fielded an ineligible player. Gracia has been hiding the points from his players to keep them motivated.

“Our girls are doing good, they are motivated,” Gracia said. “As long as they keep working the way they are working, we have the chance to compete. We have been struggling to field all of the players because of COVID and injuries, but we are playing at a good level.”

Today, Porter will travel to Edcouch-Elsa. Porter, Edcouch-Elsa and Brownsville Veterans could end up level on points if Brownsville Veterans defeats Pace and Edcouch-Elsa knocks off Porter.

Things are heating up in District 32-5A.
