RIO HONDO — The Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats had to win six games in 11 days to capture their back-to-back undefeated District 32-4A title.
The resounding 62-13 win against Hidalgo on Monday sealed their 27-7 overall and 10-0 district records.
“I am glad we finished undefeated,” senior Jalyssa Sauceda said. “This season went by so quick, it does not feel real.”
In district play, the Lady Bobcats averaged 61.5 points per game and held opponents to only 29.3 points per game.
“I am so proud of how far we have gotten,” senior Hailey Villalobos said. “A lot of us do not practice as much as others because we have classes, but we got it done on the court and stayed healthy off the court.”
Rio Hondo is on a 17-game winning streak that includes impressive non-district wins over Harvest Christian and Brownsville St. Joseph, both playoff-bound teams. Their last defeat was 52-51 to Los Fresnos in the beginning of December.
“The season went really well,” senior Alyssa Silguero said. “All of the girls communicated superbly, we moved the ball around with vigor and I am really looking forward to the playoffs.”
Junior Eliza Rodriguez led the Lady Bobcats in scoring this season, averaging 23.2 points per game. She also added five assists and five steals per game.
“I want to give a shout to all the seniors this year,” she said. “They put in a lot of hard work this season and helped us get to where we are right now.”
Freshman Emily Molina finished second on the team in scoring. She averaged 10 points per game and was lethal from beyond the arc.
Silguero averaged more than eight points and almost seven rebounds per game from down low. Senior Alexis Rhyner averaged seven points and more than four rebounds per game.
Villalobos chipped in six points and more than two steals per night, Sauceda added four points and nearly three assists per game, and senior Hadassah Campbell grabbed four rebounds and put up four points each night.
Tzipporah Campbell came off the bench to contribute to the cause.
Rio Hondo will find out its next opponent today. District 31-4A has a tie between Alice and Robstown.
