East Valley Basketball: Girls athletes earn district honors

Harlingen High coach Ashley Moncivaiz and senior guard Avery Hinojosa shared top District 32-6A awards with Weslaco High for this past season.

Hinojosa shared the MVP with the Lady Panthers’ Melanie Carrion, Moncivaiz is co-coach of the year.

Los Fresnos forward/guard Sarahi Jones is the offensive player of the year. Los Fresnos’ Aylene Ortega is newcomer of the year.

Harlingen High’s Rosa Zapata and Juli Bryant, Harlingen South’s Alexes Rocha and Jasmine Ortiz, Los Fresnos’ Olivia Parra and San Benito’s Angelina Reyes were first-team all-district.

Brownsville Veterans’ Bryana Buitureira and Brownsville Pace’s Ashley Gonzalez shared the District 32-5A MVP. Brownsville Veterans’ Catie Esquivel is the defensive player of the year, and Brownsville Lopez’s D’Arrah Howard is the newcomer of the year. Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s Arnold Torres is the coach of the year.

Brownsville Veterans’ Alexa Torres and Marianna Espinosa, Brownsville Lopez’s Sofia Castillo and Brownsville Pace’s Ariel Barrientos were first-team all-district.

Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats junior Eliza Rodriguez is the MVP of District 32-4A. The Lady Bobcats’ Victor Sauceda is coach of the year.

La Feria’s Alani Garza is the offensive player of the year, and Layni Mata of Port Isabel is the defensive player of the year. La Feria’s Rianna Gonzalez and Rio Hondo’s Emily Molina split the newcomer of the year award, and La Feria’s Lillian Martinez is the co-sixth man of the year.

All-District 32-4A first-teamers included La Feria’s Kaya Dickerson and Mariah Patlan, Port Isabel’s Emily Burrage, Raymondville’s Denae Hernandez, Amber Tamez and Caitlyn Brooks, and Rio Hondo’s Alexis Rhyner and Jalyssa Sauceda.

The Lyford Lady Bulldogs’ Damaris Bermudez is the District 31-3A co-most valuable player, and Teresa Gutierrez is coach of the year. Lady Bulldogs junior Marley Perez is the offensive player of the year, and Clarissa Salazar split the sixth-man of the year honor.

Lyford’s Emily Gonzalez, Destiny Gonzalez and Alyssa Garcia received first-team all-district nods.

In 32-1A, San Perlita’s Elyssa Nieto was co-offensive player of the year, and Summer Terry split the sixth-man award. The Lady Trojans’ Aliyah Garcia, Jasmine Rodriguez and Daniella Ramos were first-team all-district.
