Harlingen QB Davis to miss rest of season

During Harlingen’s first District 32-6A loss to San Benito on Friday, the Cardinals also suffered the loss of senior quarterback Bowie Davis to a broken foot.

Davis is out for the rest of the season.

It’s a blow for head coach Manny Gomez and the Cardinals offense as they prepare to go back to the “plan B” option, but the injury situation with his quarterback is one he never wants to see any young athlete go through.

“He (Davis) waited his turn and unfortunately this how his high school football career is coming to an end. It’s going to be an eight-week process for his operation to heal, but we still have four weeks of regular season football,” Gomez said.

“I don’t wish that on any kid because they dream about playing football in high school. As a coach it’s hard to see, especially to a kid with high aspirations, a high school career end via injury—that’s part of football and that’s part of life. I know it must be devastating to him and his family.”

Davis already missed time earlier this year after injuring his left calf against San Antonio Reagan in Week 1 and returned in Week 6 after being sidelined for five weeks.

Davis entered the Harlingen varsity program and played receiver where he played well for the Cards, but got his turn under center this season.

Unfortunately, he did not play an entire game his senior year.

Davis played five snaps in the loss the Reagan, three quarters in his return in a win over Hanna in which he passed for over 100 yards and a touchdown, and was hurt in the first half versus San Benito.

While the loss is a major one for the Cardinals, they must move forward through a situation they are familiar with.

Gomez changed the offense up this season and did so successfully thanks to the running game led by Leo Tienda, Rene Medina and Michael Allen Gonzalez.

Look for them to be the heart of the offense.

Gomez did say they hope for a “long shot” chance that Davis could return in the event of a lengthy playoff run.
