West tops East at RGVCA All-Star game, 24-3

During a tie game late in the first half of the Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association East-West All-Star game, those instincts took over as Perez rolled out to his left and found Bosquez for a 27-yard touchdown.

Their latest hook up broke a 3-3 tie and gave the West All-Stars a lead they would not relinquish as they rolled to a 24-3 victory over the East squad on Saturday night at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

“I stepped out of the pocket and I saw (Bosquez), and I knew I could trust him because he’s my receiver during the season,” Perez said. “It was good to hook up with him one last time.”

While the trust was there, hauling in the pass near the goal line was still a challenge against a solid East defense.

“It wasn’t easy because the defense had good coverage all night long; we just made the play,” Bosquez said. “Me and Jon have been doing it for four years, and for us to hook up just one more time in our senior season was a privilege.”

The touchdown was the only one in the first three periods from either team as both defenses flew to the ball all night.

The East struggled all night on offense and only put up a 31-yard field goal from Progreso kicker Cristian Chavez.

The kick was the culmination of a 14-play, 59-yard drive that started after San Benito’s Mario Valdez intercepted Edinburg Vela quarterback Fabian Pedraza’s pass intended for teammate Eddy Luna.

“The timing wasn’t there all night because it’s tough to rotate quarterbacks,” said East head coach Oscar Salinas. “At the end of the day, the team did a good job and they are all true All-Stars, and they fought to the end.”

La Feria quarterback Isaac Galpin saw quite a bit of the snaps under center, and looked sharp running and passing the ball at times, but a pair of interceptions killed a couple of promising drives for the East.

Despite that, the game stayed 10-3 until midway through the fourth quarter when Pedraza found Sharyland’s Seth Carter for a 20-yard score in the back right corner of the end zone and a 17-3 lead.

That was set up five plays after Sharyland’s Alexis Escoto turned a fake punt into a 27-yard gain on a fourth-and-6 play on their own 34.

Vela’s Luna ended the night’s scoring with a 25-yard catch and run screen pass with just under three minutes to go.
