Weslaco separates itself from the pack as 32-6A playoff race heats up

And while the top two spots are already reserved, three teams remain in the hunt as Harlingen South, Los Fresnos and Weslaco East are aiming for the final two spots.

Weslaco separated itself from the pack after a 6-3 win at San Benito. The Lady Panthers are now in sole possession of first place with a 12-1 record while the Lady Greyhounds are in second with an 11-2 mark.

All roads lead to the final week of the regular season. Weslaco can clinch the district title outright with a win against Los Fresnos. In order for San Benito to claim a share the Lady Hounds need a win and a Weslaco loss. At worst, San Benito can clinch the second seed with a win.

Harlingen South picked up a big 2-0 win against Weslaco East thus completing a season sweep and gaining the upper hand in the race. The Lady Hawks are now 8-5.

Los Fresnos also shined in its 17-0 win over Brownsville Rivera, improving to 8-5.

“All the teams in this district are coached well. It’s been a battle each week,” said San Benito coach Kristy Leal. “It was a matter of who will show up that night and make plays. The fact that there is still a tie for the final spots with one game left in the regular season says it all about this district.”

The case is simple for Los Fresnos and South: Win and they’re in. Weslaco East will need to win and get some help in order to clinch a postseason berth.

Los Fresnos may have the toughest task as they will travel to Weslaco to take on the Lady Panthers. Weslaco East, meanwhile, is at Brownsville Hanna while Harlingen South hosts Rivera.
