With some of the teams in the top of five of RGVSports.com’s high school football Top 10 poll taking losses last week, this week’s poll had some significant movement.
There’s a new team. Another team is back in. And there is a lot of shuffling heading into Week 8.
Some things never change, however. San Benito remained the unanimous No. 1 team. The Greyhounds are 6-0 after a 70-6 beatdown of Brownsville Rivera last week.
San Benito was voted as No. 1 by all of RGVSports.com’s seven voters for the sixth consecutive week. The seven voters are writers who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers (the Monitor, Valley Morning Star and Brownsville Herald).
San Benito visits Harlingen South on Friday.
After No. 1 is where the poll becomes fluid. There are new teams at No. 2 and No. 3.
Edinburg Vela is No. 2, moving up one spot. The SaberCats are 5-1 after beating PSJA Southwest 59-6 last week. Vela plays PSJA Memorial on Thursday.
No. 3 is Harlingen High, which jumped two spots after a 13-7 win over Weslaco High last week. The Cardinals have won three in a row and visit Weslaco East on Friday.
PSJA North stayed No. 4. The Raiders are 6-0 after winning against Edinburg North last week, 17-8. PSJA North plays PSJA Southwest on Friday.
McAllen Memorial moved up two spots to No. 5. The Mustangs are 5-2 and beat McAllen High 42-19 last week. McAllen Memorial visits La Joya to play the Coyotes on Friday.
Los Fresnos is up three spots to No. 6 after its dramatic come-from-behind 17-16 win at Weslaco East last week. The Falcons are 3-3 and host Brownsville Hanna on Friday.
Edcouch-Elsa dropped five spots to No. 7. The Yellowjackets fell 50-20 to Brownsville Veterans Memorial at home last week. At 4-2, Edcouch-Elsa visits Mercedes for the 64th chapter of their rivalry game on Friday.
Weslaco East dropped three spots to No. 8 after its loss to Los Fresnos. The Wildcats are 3-3 and host Harlingen High on Friday.
Sharyland High is making its debut in this season’s top 10 poll at No. 9. The Rattlers have won five games in a row since a Week 1 loss to Weslaco East.
Sharyland High plays Sharyland Pioneer in the third installment of the “Snakeskin Classic” on Friday.
Edinburg Economedes is back in the poll at No. 10. The Jaguars are 5-1 after beating PSJA High 35-14 last week.
Economedes plays Edinburg North on Friday.
Other teams receiving votes in this week’s poll: Weslaco High, Brownsville St. Joseph, Sharyland Pioneer and Brownsville Lopez.
