Brownsville Veterans Memorial senior Jason Villarreal showed great power at the plate in 2022 with four home runs, and also flashed on the mound with his pitching skills.
Villarreal is going to be on the mound at New Mexico Junior College, the college he signed with last week.
“I accomplished one of my childhood dreams,” Villarreal said. “All the work I put in was for a reason, that reason came true, and it all worked out in the end. All of the sacrifice … I feel relieved, but I am not done with this. I am going to keep going.”

The senior won eight games on the mound in 12 appearances. Villarreal batted 0.397 with 29 hits, and is expected to be a pitcher in Hobbs, New Mexico.
Villarreal’s fastball is consistently hitting high 80s and topped out once at 90mph in the summer, he said.

“I feel relieved,” Villarreal said. “I do not have to worry about the pressure of getting a scholarship at the end. I Just have to keep trusting my ability and do what I do.
Villarreal plans on studying finance and hopes to continue playing baseball after two years at New Mexico Junior College.
