Vikings hold open tennis tournament

Pace is the host of an open tennis tournament to be played Friday and Saturday at four sites around Brownsville.

“Since it’s an open tournament, we won’t know exactly how many teams there will be until they show up,” Pace tennis coach Ana Rodriguez said. “I know there will be at least 10 teams, and probably a lot more than that. Teams will be coming from the Upper Valley, including Edinburg, McAllen and Rio Grande City, along with the two Harlingen schools, Los Fresnos, Rio Hondo, Port Isabel, Raymondville and La Feria, plus the Brownsville schools.”

The Pace courts will be used along with courts at Brownsville Veterans Memorial, Hanna and the Brownsville Tennis Center.

Competition is scheduled to begin between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. each day, with the finals set for Saturday.

Harlingen was the host of a tournament last weekend, and Hanna will be the host of a 16-team invitational event next week.

“We’ve had more tournaments in the Lower Valley this (school) year because in the Upper Valley they’ve been trying to have tournaments that run Saturdays and Mondays, and they haven’t been getting the participation they wanted. More teams have been coming to the Lower Valley tournaments.

“We’ve done this tournament (hosted by Pace) before,” she added. “We hope to have a good tournament with quite a few teams.”
