Vela’s Molina tabbed 2019-20 TGCA All-Star

Edinburg Vela’s Andrea Molina was named a 2019-20 state-wide girls basketball all-star by the Texas Girls Coaches Association on Tuesday, the only player from the Rio Grande Valley to earn the distinction at any classification level.

Molina, the SaberCats’ leading scorer, was part of a group of 48 of the most elite juniors in girls high school basketball across Texas selected.

The TGCA Basketball Committee, which is composed of member high school basketball coaches, selects 24 athletes from Classes 1A-4A and an additional 24 players from 5A and 6A schools to form four 12-player teams. Selections are made based upon nominations submitted by member coaches.

Molina was one of only two players to appear in every game this season for the SaberCats, averaging 11.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game across 33 contests. The junior point guard earned First Team All-District honors in District 31-6A after helping lead Vela to the postseason.

She was also honored with a Class 6A Second Team All-Valley pick by the Rio Grande Valley Basketball Coaches Association.

Molina will compete on the TGCA Class 5A-6A Blue All-Star Team as one of four players representing Region IV, joining Corpus Christi Veterans’ Anaisja Banks, Laredo United’s Evelyn Quiroz and San Antonio Veterans’ Marley Rokas.

The TGCA summer clinic all-star festivities will be held in Arlington with a final date and location to be determined due to the coronavirus pandemic.
