Vazquez leads Sharyland High past Edinburg Vela at ECISD tourney

EDINBURG — Day 2 of the inaugural Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District’s Louie Alamia Baseball Tournament went on as scheduled as teams from across the Rio Grande Valley played what could be their final games for the foreseeable future.

Highlighting the second day tournament slate was a matchup featuring two of the RGV’s top programs — the Edinburg Vela SaberCats and Sharyland High Rattlers.

While the SaberCats had home field advantage, that mattered none to Sharyland High senior Martin Vazquez as the first baseman made himself feel right at home.

The Rattlers reached base during the first inning, setting up Vazquez, Sharyland’s cleanup hitter, to blast a grand slam over the left-field fence for an early 4-0 lead.

Vazquez drove in another run during the top half of the second, then proceeded to homer a second time during the fourth inning with a 3-run shot to center field, which gave his Rattlers an 11-0 win over the SaberCats in four innings.

Vazquez finished 3 for 3 with eight RBIs, two home runs, one grand slam and two runs scored.

Sharyland’s Randy Garcia, Saul Soto and Victor Sanchez drove in the Rattlers’ other three runs. Sanchez started, pitching four innings and allowed five hits, zero earned runs and two walks while striking out six batters for the win. Edinburg Vela’s Jaime Perez Jr. went 2 for 2 at the plate.

Elsewhere in Edinburg, Valley View beat Edinburg North 7-5, Edinburg Economedes topped McAllen Rowe 8-6, and Edinburg High defeated IDEA Quest 15-0.

The Economedes Jaguars finished 3-1 in the tournament with victories against Rowe, IDEA Quest and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, as did the Edinburg Vela SaberCats, which earned wins against Donna High, Edcouch-Elsa and Rowe.

While the University Interscholastic League canceled all contests beginning Monday through Sunday, March 29, Saturday’s ECISD Louie Alamia Baseball Tournament games are still scheduled to be played at three sites across Edinburg.

At Edinburg High School, the Bobcats will host the McAllen High Bulldogs. At Edinburg North High School, the Cougars will take on the McAllen Memorial Mustangs. And at Edinburg Vela High School, Mission Veterans will face McAllen Rowe. All three games will be played at 10 a.m.
