Valley View reaches new mark in Esquivel era

The brief history of Valley View Tigers football isn’t a good one. The program is only 12 seasons into its existence. Most of those years were spent getting stepped on by opponent after opponent to what seemed like no end.

However, longtime Valley football coach Eli Esquivel appears in his second season to have the Tigers going where no coach has gone before: a competent direction.

“It’s like we tell the kids: hard work pays off,” Esquivel said. “This is only my second year here, and they’ve been working hard. Not only our varsity kids, but out freshman and JV teams, as well.”

Valley View’s varsity team notched its third win of the year with a 24-14 victory over winless Roma in Week 7. The win moved the Tigers to 3-3 on the season.

The Tigers’ third win this season is the most at the school since 2012, when Valley View had its best season ever with a 6-4 finish. Additionally, the Valley View freshman and JV teams are also 3-3 at this point in the season.

“We’ve got nine victories in our program this year, which has never happened here before,” Esquivel said. “When we got here, there wasn’t a freshman team or a JV team. These kids are making history.”

Valley View will try to jump above the .500 mark when it travels to Laredo Cigarroa on Thursday night.
