Upper-Valley Football Roundup: Cougars cruise past Jaguars

The Edinburg North Cougars cruised past Edinburg Economedes 53-0 to win their District 31-6A opener Friday night at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.

“The guys did a tremendous job executing on both sides of the ball. I thought we came out a little flat the first drive, but once the first series was out of the way, these guys put the pedal to the metal in executing the game plan,” Edinburg North head coach Damian Gonzalez said. “Defensively, the guys did a tremendous job.”

Seven different Cougars scored touchdowns led by quarterback Evan Medrano. The Cougars also received a scoring boost from their defense as Eddie Molina and Federico Cappadona returned interceptions for touchdowns.

Edinburg North moves on to face Mission High (2-1, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo.

NON-DISTRICT

WESLACO HIGH 49, LAREDO NIXON 2: At Weslaco, the Panthers pummeled the Mustangs in their final non-district tune-up game to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Weslaco’s defense played lights out as Nixon’s only points were scored on a safety. The Panthers also forced five turnovers, two of which were returned for touchdowns by defensive end Jeremiah Vega and a 95-yard pick-six by linebacker Cesar Gomez.

Offensively, running back Marcus Saenz and Weslaco’s two quarterback system of Ethan Gallegos and Justin Rodriguez had plenty of room to operate as the offensive line established itself early on.

“One thing we stressed in practice was playing fast and physical, and that’s what they did tonight,” Weslaco High head coach Roy Stroman said.

Weslaco High is headed into its bye week before kicking off District 32-6A action against Donna North on Sept. 23 at Bennie La Prade Stadium in Donna.
