Upper-Valley Class 5A Notebook: Treviño gaining steam offensively

Mercedes all-purpose player Tyrell Treviño burst onto the scene as a sophomore last season, racking up 630 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns in eight appearances.

After missing the Tigers’ 2021 season opener, Treviño has picked up where he left off, compiling 583 total yards of offense and six touchdowns through four contests.

“He’s a very athletic and explosive player,” Mercedes head coach Roger Adame said. “We feel that if we can get him the ball, he can make things happen. He’s a strong kid. Every time he touches the ball, he feels he has an opportunity to do big things with it. He’s one of those special players.”

Treviño put together his best game of the year during Week 5, taking his lone carry 86 yards for a touchdown, while nabbing five catches for 148 yards and two scores.

On the year, the playmaking wideout has snagged 18 receptions for a district-leading 393 yards and four touchdowns, while toting the ball five times for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Treviño is averaging 33.4 yards per carry and 21.8 yards per reception, showing the junior’s big-play ability.

“He’s an explosive player,” Adame said. “We’ve been in a situation where we’re in third-and-long or we need a big play, he’s one of those guys we’re going to look for. Our offensive coordinator, Paul Reyes, and offensive staff do a good job of coming up with different ways every week to get him involved in the gameplan and make sure he’s one of our big contributors.”

The Tigers (5-0, 3-0) look to continue rolling, hosting the Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets (1-4, 1-2) at 7 p.m. on Friday at Tiger Stadium.
