UIL sets new dates for tennis, volleyball postseason

The University Interscholastic League announced changes and updates for four high school sports Wednesday, including new postseason dates for volleyball and team tennis.

As previously set by the UIL in July, high school sports such as swimming & diving, team tennis and volleyball are allowed to begin practicing Monday, Sept. 7. In the Rio Grande Valley, start date for those sports is Sept. 28, due to local county health orders preventing high schools from hosting athletic activities.

But as those sports are preparing for launch across the state in just a few days, the UIL released an updated calendar for swimming & diving and wrestling and a change to postseason play for volleyball and team tennis.

For UIL Class 1A-4A volleyball, the state semifinals are set for Nov. 16-17, with the state championships slated for Nov. 21. For Class 5A-6A volleyball, UIL state semifinals will take place Dec. 7-8, with state championships to be decided Dec. 12.

For team tennis, the UIL has ruled tournaments will be allowed during the regular season with no more than eight teams participating. The 5A and 6A schools are allowed to begin competition beginning Sept. 7. The district certification deadline for team tennis is Oct. 24. The regional final is set for Nov. 9-10, with the UIL team tennis state championships to be held Nov. 17.

Additional information will be released at a later time concerning team tennis regional and state meets, the UIL stated.

As for swimming & diving, Class 5A and 6A schools may start interschool competition beginning September 7 with only dual and tri-meets allowed. The UIL set Jan. 30 as the district certification deadline, with regionals slated for Feb. 5 and 6. The UIL girls state swimming & diving state meet will be held Feb. 19-20, with the UIL boys state swimming & diving state meet set for Feb. 26-27.

Wrestling season is set to begin Jan. 18 as the first day for minimum weight certification, with March 27 as the last day for weight certification. District certification must be completed by April 10, and the regional and state meets will be held April 16-17 and April 23-24.
