The University of Interscholastic League released its conference cutoff numbers and division breaks Friday for the 2016-18 reclassification and realignment.

Edinburg Vela, whose snapshot enrollment number was reported at 2,215 by athletic coordinator Michael Salinas, will make the leap from Class 5A to 6A when the realignments are released Feb. 1.

“We anticipated that once we turned in our snapshot numbers that we’ll move up to 6A,” Salinas said. “So we’ll deal with that as we get closer. Right now we’re concentrating on our football team finishing strong.”

“We were in (what’s now Class) 6A when we opened (in 2012),” Salinas added. “Most coaches (for other sports on campus) anticipated it. We’ll be back at that level. We’ll be with some familiar opponents. I think it’ll be good for us either way.”

PSJA High will also make the leap from 5A to 6A, with its snapshot enrollment at 2,205. PSJA Southwest came close to joining, as well, at 2,075.

Brownsville Lopez and Brownsville Veterans Memorial will slide down from 6A to 5A.
