McAllen Memorial running back Trevor Speights announced on social media Monday night that he has committed to Stanford.

“After a tremendous amount of prayer and thought, I have finally come to (the) conclusion where I will further my education for the next 4 years,” Speights posted on his Twitter account. “First I want to thank all the great programs that have extended an offer to me. With that being said for the next 4 years I will be attending Stanford University. #NerdNation”

Speights finished his senior season with 3,195 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns. He amassed 9,868 career rushing yards, finishing fourth on the state’s all-time rushing list.

After setting the Valley’s all-time career rushing record earlier in the season, Speights added to his list of records with his season totals. He surpassed the Valley’s all-time career rushing touchdown record, finishing with 116 career touchdowns. He broke the Valley’s single season touchdown record.

Speights is also one of final 10 candidates for the national PARADE 2015 Player of the Year. The candidates will be narrowed to five later this month. The winner will be selected at the beginning of 2016.

As a junior at Memorial last season, Speights posted the third best single-season rushing total in Valley history, amassing 2,655 yards with 30 touchdowns. Speights has earned both AP first-team All-State status and All-Valley Player of the Year honors for two straight seasons.

As a sophomore in 2013, Speights ran for 2,114 yards and scored 26 total touchdowns.

Speights had originally committed to the University of Arizona before withdrawing his name in April.

“I just wanted to weigh all of my options,” Speights told The Monitor at the time. “I didn’t want to leave that decision that I made from freshman year. I wanted to reevaluate all of my options.”

Since first committing to Arizona, Speights had picked up offers from four Southeastern Conference schools: Texas A&M, Tennessee, Missouri and Vanderbilt to add to Texas State and Rice.

Earlier in the year, images of Speights visiting A&M, Tennessee and Texas State had been posted to Twitter or Facebook.

Speights told The Monitor earlier this year he plans to study either physical therapy or engineering.
