After three years at Edcouch-Elsa, Rick Treviño is moving on to fill the Mercedes boys basketball vacancy.
“As of today, I’m a Mercedes Tiger,” Treviño said Friday. “I felt it was time to move on, and when the option popped up at Mercedes, I took it. Mercedes is such a good place, I hear good things about the program.
“Coach (Eric) Steinbrunner told me a lot about it and it sounded good to me.”
Steinbrunner left Mercedes to take the PSJA Memorial opening after his team missed the playoffs this past season.
Treviño spent three seasons at E-E, falling short of making the playoffs in his year and making it the last two.
Treviño said he was approved for the job Wednesday and formally accepted it Friday after talking to his former and current players.
“I am not leaving E-E the way I thought I would, but I do not regret any of my time at E-E,” Treviño said. “At the same time, I am very excited to head the program at Mercedes and continue what Steinbrunner has established.”
