Track notes: La Feria sending 6 to state; Santa Maria qualifies 1

The La Feria track & field program is heading back to Austin after a solid outing a regionals this past week.

The Lions will send six athletes to the UIL state tournament, which will be held at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus on May 11-13.

Tina Sierra will represent the Lionettes in the 1600, 800 and 3200. At regionals the senior finished the 1600-meter in first place with a time of 5:29.24, the 800-meter in second place (2:19.65) and the 3200 in first place.

However, Sierra will not be alone.

The senior will be accompanied by teammate Dariana Vasquez, who will also compete in the 3200. At regionals Vasquez placed second in the 3200-meter, just behind Sierra. Vasquez also placed third in the 1600-meter run.

On the boys side, the Lions’ Reyes Rodriguez will compete in three events at the state tournament. Rodriguez will run the 400-meter dash, 800 and is part of the 4×400-meter relay team. At regionals, the junior took first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.59 and second place in the 400-meter (50.74).

Another Lion competing in an individual event is Julian Trevino, who took first place at regionals in the long jump.

In team events, the Lions will take part in the boys 4×400-meter relay. Darius Hernandez, Brandon Perez, Julian Trevino and Reyes Rodriguez took first at regionals with a time of 3:24.36.

In Class 2A, Santa Maria also has an athlete headed to Austin.

Kristen Aleman will represent the Cougars in the 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter. She took first in the 1600 at regionals with a time of 5:33.37 and finished the 3200-meter with a time of 12:35.14.
