Just two days into the 2016 season and the anticipation to get started is already in high gear at Rio Hondo.
With a new offensive coordinator at the helm and a new offensive look, head coach Rocky James is eager to get the season going.
“It feels great getting back into it,” said James. “This is my ninth year here as head coach and eleventh overall but it’s great getting back onto this field because these kids are great.
“I’m really excited about the offense because we had a change in the offensive coordinator spot. I have Victor Sauceda now running it and he’s brought a different attitude to the offense.”
Another change fans will quickly notice is at the quarterback spot. That’s where junior Tyler Bush will be looked upon to make some magic happen.
“He’s very fast, very good at throwing the ball and is going to be exiting to watch,” said James. “He sees the whole field and makes good decisions with the ball.
“Tyler just brings so much to the table because he’s a very smart kid and very passionate about football. Last year as a JV quarterback he was unbelievable and he played the last two or three game with us on varsity and did a great job.”
And Bush will have plenty of targets. Coach James has five to six options that have really excelled and said, “Any of them could be starters.”
A total of 98 participants showed up for the start of practice on Monday, with 42 of them penciled in for the varsity team.
On the defensive side of the ball the Bobcats return seven starters, while on the offensive side only three return.
