Tarpons ousted from playoffs by Cuero

STAFF REPORTS

Port Isabel fell out of the Class 4A Division II playoffs with a 48-14 loss to Cuero on Friday night at Cabaniss Stadium in Corpus Christi.

Omar Silva threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Garza during the third quarter and Ivan Gonzalez ran for a 3-yard touchdown to give the Tarpons their only points of the night.

Three turnovers and multiple drives ending with punts helped Cuero’s offense pull ahead early. The Tarpons ended the first half trailing 34-0 but scored their two touchdowns during the second half.

“We played harder, but they were better and faster,” coach Monty Stumbaugh said. “We kept fighting until the end.”

Stumbaugh was proud of his players’ efforts throughout the season.

“They did everything we asked them to do this season,” he said. “They played with great effort and great heart. They played the game the way they’re supposed to play.”

The Tarpons finish the season with a 6-4 record, 3-2 in District 16-4A Division II.
