Tamez joins Alvin CC softball

This will not be Brownsville Veterans Memorial senior pitcher Alexis Tamez’s last season on the softball diamond.

Tamez signed to play with Alvin Community College on Wednesday afternoon at Brownsville Veterans Memorial High School. Alvin is a town on the southern outskirts of Houston, 33 miles from the center of the city.

“This has always been my dream,” Tamez said. “I have been working hard for it every day. I am excited to be able to play at the next level.

Tamez had a solid season in the circle as a junior during the spring 2022. Tamez went 18-6 as the Chargers made a trip to the third round of the playoffs and had Corpus Christi Flour Bluff on the ropes until a late surge by the Corpus area team ended Brownsville Veterans season.

The senior struck out 130 batters as a junior and finished with an ERA of 2.687.

Tamez visited the campus in Alvin twice and sealed the deal in October. The pitcher hopes to land with another university or college after two years in Alvin.

“I felt very comfortable, the times I have gone,” she said. “I like it, it is going to give me the opportunity to prove that I can play at the upper level.”

Signing before the season was important for Tamez. The pitcher said doing so will ensure she maintains her competitive edge as she wants to prove that she deserves the opportunity in Alvin.

Tamez plans on studying biology in Alvin, but for now Tamez and the Chargers, a team only losing one player — a pivotal piece — look ahead to 2023.

“We are all trying to win our first district title,” Tamez said. “We have a lot of competition this year, and we want to go as far as we can in the playoffs.”
