Sub-6A’s top female athlete to be recognized at All-Valley awards

Three of the Rio Grande Valley’s most talented female student-athletes are nominees for the Sub-6A Female Athlete of the Year that will be named on June 14.

The winner will be recognized at the 2016 All-Valley Sports Awards Banquet at DoubleTree Suites in McAllen. Dallas Cowboys legend Drew Pearson is the keynote speaker for the event.

Representatives from the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, The Monitor, the Brownsville Herald and the Valley Morning Star voted on three nominations for the category.

Rio Grande Valley Chevy Dealers is the presenting sponsor of the banquet. Representing the Rio Grande Valley Chevy Dealers are Bert Ogden Chevrolet, Clark Chevrolet, Fiesta Chevrolet, Gillman Chevrolet, Payne Weslaco Motors, Rio Motor Co. and Tipotex Chevrolet.

Pearson, who was inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor in 2011 after a standout career defined by his performances in the clutch, will highlight the function hosted by RGVSports.com in conjunction with the RGV Sports Hall of Fame.

The awards banquet will begin at 6 p.m. and recognizes team and individual standouts in multiple sports over the past year. Tickets are $40. All nominees get in free.

The nominees for Sub-6A Female Athlete of the Year:

>> Alexandria Martinez, Port Isabel: Martinez did it all for the Lady Tarpons, competing in volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field. The senior rebounded from an ACL injury her sophomore year to lead her volleyball team to the playoffs as its defensive specialist. She also averaged 16.4 points, a Valley-best 7.2 steals and 4 rebounds for the Tarpons’ basketball team.

>> Karla Sosa, Brownsville Porter: The senior competed in volleyball, basketball and softball, and will play volleyball at Phillips College next fall. The 5-foot-10 middle blocker and three-year starter for the Cowgirls will play for a program that went 35-6 and made the NJCAA Division I national tournament in 2015.

>> Jaida Muhammad, Edinburg Vela: Muhammad was a star for the SaberCats in volleyball and basketball. In volleyball, she amassed 297 kills, 352 digs and 18 aces as Vela’s libero. In basketball, she averaged 13.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 steals for the area-qualifying SaberCats.
