Sub-5A notebook: Undefeated Tarpons continue to climb up state poll

In District 16-4A DII, Port Isabel keeps moving up the AP state polls to No. 17 in a tie with Atlanta.

After defeating Hidalgo 38-17, the Tarpons improved to 3-0 and moved up from 18 last week.

Up next for the Tarpons is (0-3) Valley View, which has had a tough start to the 2014 season being outscored 108-28 in three games.

ITS SUGAR BOWL TIME: In District 16-3A DI, the Santa Rosa Warriors are facing District 16-2A DI rivals La Villa this Friday at Warrior Stadium.

The Warriors picked up their first win of the 2014 season against Progreso, while the Cardinals lost a close one to the an explosive Brownsville St. Joseph offense.

If history holds true, then La Villa can expect a victory. For the past five years the vistiting team has won every contest in the series.

Both teams come into the game with 1-2 season records.

KATS BACK IN WIN COLUMN: Raymondville is back to its winning ways after beating Lyford last week 21-12 in the 75 annual Cotton Bowl.

Head coach Frank Cantu can be pleased with his defense after allowing only allowing 180 total yards against the Bulldogs.

Coach Cantu can also be pleased that Christopher Trevino and Miguel Tristian combined for nearly 300 yards rushing.

Tristan had 194 yards on 18 carries while teammate Trevino had 98 yards on 13 carries and threw for another 79 yards with two touchdowns.

BOUNCING BACK: In District 16-2A DI, Santa Maria will be looking to rebound from a 40-2 loss to Santa Gertrudis Academy in Kingsville.

“We knew it was going to be a tough hard fought game going into Kingsville,” said Santa Maria head coach Mark Aguero. “We were just out played. But this week will be our first home game and our young man are excited to be playing on our field.”

This week the Cougars (1-2) face Benavides, which lost 51-14 to MMA earlier in the season and 41-6 to Ben Bolt last week.

“We played a scrimmage with Benavides earlier in the year and our coaches and players know what they bring to the table,” said Aguero. “As long as we execute our game plan the rest should follow.”

READY TO ROAR: Over in District 16-4A DI, La Feria will try to bounce back from a 28-14 loss to rivals Mercedes.

The Lions face a tough Sharyland Pioneer team that endured its first loss of the season to Corpus Christie Ray 37-8.

La Feria will look to tighten up the defense after giving up 327 total yards to the Tigers.
