Sub-5A notebook: A look at the playoff picture

Coming into the final week of the regular season, the playoff push in the sub-5A districts is still on.

While some teams are still fighting for playoff spots, others are left to fight for seeding purposes.

ALMOST SET IN STONE: In District 16-4A DI, Kingsville King stands alone at the top with a record of 5-4, 3-0. The Brahmas can win the district title if they beat Hidalgo (1-8, 0-3) this week.

However, if Hidalgo can manage to knock off Kingsville, the Zapata Hawks could share the district title if they can take care of business against Grulla.

For the first time this season the La Feria Lions lost consecutive games, dropping them to 6-3, 2-2. The Lions lost to Zapata (7-2, 2-1) 31-21 and dropped down to third in district after a strong 2-0 start.

The Lions are on a bye this week and despite the back-to-back loses have already secured a playoff spot.

CLEAR PATH: In District 16-4A DII, Orange Grove put to rest any doubts of having to share the district crown after beating Port Isabel (7-2, 2-2) 33-7 last week. The Bulldogs (8-1, 4-0) can clinch the outright district title by beating West Oso (2-7, 1-3) this week. However if the Bears manage to hand Orange Grove their only district loss this season, the Rio Hondo Bobcats could be in for a nice surprise.

Rio Hondo wraps up the regular season with a home game against Progreso (1-8, 0-4) this week. After beating Raymondville 27-13 last week, the Bobcats improved their record to 7-2, 3-1 and sit firmly in second place of the district, waiting for Orange grove to slip up.

Port Isabel and Raymondville (5-4, 2-2) meet this weekend in a game that will have seeding implications. The Tarpons are tied for third with the Bearkats after both dropped games last week.

The winner between the two will keep the third seed while the loser will have to settle for the fourth.

FIGHT FOR THIRD: In District 16-3A DI, San Diego (7-2, 4-0) remained in firm control of the district title after beating Santa Rosa (5-4, 2-2) 42-14 last week. The Vaqueros can claim the district crown with a victory against Falfurrias (3-6, 1-3) this week.

Santa Rosa and Lyford are tied for third and face completely different quality of opponents heading into the final week of the season.

The Warrior welcome Aransas Pass (5-4, 3-1) while the bulldogs host Bishop who is 0-9, 0-4 this year.

MESSY SITUATION: In District 16-2A DI, Three Rivers controls its district title destiny after beating Santa Maria 53-12 to remain unblemished at 9-0, 4-0.

However, things could get complicated for the fourth and final postseason spot. As it stands Riviera (6-3, 2-2) and Corpus Christ London (7-2, 2-2) are tied for third while La Villa (2-7, 1-2) sits in fifth.

The Cardinals could sneak into the fourth spot with a victory at home against Santa Maria (3-6, 0-4) and a London loss plus a Riviera loss.

The fight for the fourth spot could go down to head-to-head or if needed it may boil down to point differentials.
