Sub-5A football notes: Cougars win, Dogs drop 3rd straight, Warriors fall short

FREDDY GONZALEZ | Valley Morning Star

While most Class 6A teams enjoyed a bye week, there were plenty of sub-5A schools that kept Valley football moving. From a nail-biting contest in Raymondville to some not-so-close victories in Rio Hondo and Port Isabel, Week Four was interesting.

SANTA MARIA AT BENAVIDES: The Santa Maria Cougars picked up a convincing 35-7 win over Benavides on Friday. With the win, the Cougars improved their overall record to 2-2. Up next for Santa Maria is Agua Dulce at home this Friday. After starting the year with a 20-18 loss to MMA in Week One, the Cougars rebounded with a 12-7 victory over Monte Alto. However, the Cougars dropped the next game to CC John Paul II 26-14.

The Longhorns poses a 2-1 record with wins over Charlotte (27-14) and Runge (14-13).

LYFORD AT GRULLA: The Bulldogs dropped their third consecutive game over the weekend. Lyford lost a close 34-21 contest to Grulla and now looks to La Villa to find its second win of the season.

In the game against the Gators, Chase Hinojosa threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns on 15 of 30 passing. Both Chris Gonzalez and Alfonso Garcia hauled in a TD in the contest.

On the Ground, both Javier Gonzalez (55 yards, TD) and Hinojosa (53 yards) combined for more than 100 yards rushing. Up next for the Bulldogs are the La Villa Cardinals this Friday before starting District 16-3A Division I action against Falfurrias on Oct. 13.

SANTA ROSA AT ARANSAS PASS: The Santa Rosa Warriors dropped their first game of the year to the Aransas Pass Panthers on Friday. The Warriors lost to the Panthers 34-20 on the road to drop to 3-1 overall this season. Prior to the loss the Warriors beat Hidalgo 42-28, La Villa 34-14 and Progreso 21-18.

Next up for Santa Rosa is the Battle of 506 against La Feria on Friday.
