Speights selected to play for US Under-19 national team

McAllen Memorial’s Trevor Speights has been selected to play for the U.S. Under-19 national team in a game against Canada as part of the 2016 International Bowl.

Speights, who recently wrapped up his senior season with the Mustangs, was one of 45 players from around the country chosen to take part in the seventh annual International Bowl series. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Jan. 31 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Speights was one of 11 players in the state picked to play for the national team, assembled and managed by USA Football, which is recognized as the sport’s national governing body by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

With 9,868 career rushing yards, Speights finished fourth on the state’s all-time rushing list. He wrapped up his senior season with 3,195 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns.

On Dec. 7, Speights announced his decision to play for Stanford.

Speights, who totaled 116 career rushing TDs, is one of 10 final candidates for the national PARADE 2015 Player of the Year. The candidates will be narrowed to five later this month. The winner will be selected at the beginning of 2016.
