Source: Ramirez tabbed to lead Hidalgo football

Mike Ramirez, the former Brownsville Lopez head football coach and athletic coordinator, has been tabbed the new football coach and athletic director at Hidalgo, according to a source.

Ramirez is slated to become Hidalgo’s fourth football coach in the past five years, succeeding Taihi Jones, who was reassigned on Jan. 12 after two seasons at the helm. Jones went 4-7 in 2013, earning a postseason berth, before going 1-9 last season.

At Lopez, Ramirez compiled a 6-14 record in two seasons before leaving in March 2013 for the same position at Carrollton Turner. There, Ramirez went 0-10 in his first season and 4-6 the following year.

Ramirez did not return phone calls seeking comment Monday night.

Since 2009, Hidalgo has had three different figures leading its football program in Robin Kirk (2009-11), Scott Ford (2012-13) and Jones (2013-15).

The Pirates have managed to string together five wins just once in the past seven years.

The Hidalgo ISD held a regular school board meeting Monday night. Among the items listed on the agenda was “discussion and possible action on superintendent’s recommendation for the position of Hidalgo ISD athletic director/head football coach.”
