Sharyland High takes down Laredo Cigarroa

The Sharyland High Rattlers opened District 16-5A DII play Thursday with a 42-17 road win over Laredo Cigarroa on Thursday.

Orly Lopez scored in the first quarter on a 20-yard run to answer Cigarroa’s opening drive touchdown.

Next, Robert Mancha took one to the house on a 20-yard rush for the Rattlers, and the scoring didn’t stop there, running out to a 28-10 halftime lead.

“In the second half we took control of the game,” Sharyland head coach Ron Adame said. “Overall we were able to bounce back from last week’s disappointing loss.”

Benjamin Valdiva scored twice for the Rattlers, once on a 5-yard scamper and another on a 50-yard run.

Also scoring for the Rattlers were Many Cantu and Damian Pruñeda.

Sharyland High (3-2, 1-0) hosts Roma (0-4) at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 3.

NON DISTRICT

RIO HONDO, 41, GRULLA 19: At Grulla, the Gators were not able to stop the Rio Hondo offensive attack.

“They hit us with some big plays in the first half,” Grulla head coach Abel Gonzalez said.

By halftime, the Bobcats had pulled away to a 28-19 lead.

“Jonathan Huerta scored twice in the first half,” Gonzalez said. “He ran the ball well.”

Grulla (2-3) hosts Port Isabel (1-3) at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 4.

Rio Hondo (3-2) will take on La Feria (5-0) at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at home.
