Sharyland High sinks PSJA Memorial

PHARR — Sharyland High’s playmakers went to work against PSJA Memorial to lead the Rattlers to a 38-14 win Thursday at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

Sharyland improved to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in District 16-5A DII. The Wolverines fell to 3-4 on the year and 0-2 in district.

“That was huge for us. We talked about being 2-0 — we talked about we got to forget about what happened in non-district play,” Sharyland High head coach Craig Krell said. “Our record coming into district wasn’t what we wanted it, but we wanted to be 2-0 after tonight and we are.”

Sharyland running back Alan Guerrero ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Athlete Alek Gonzalez totaled 139 yards from scrimmage and one score. Quarterback Bo Krell threw for 121 yards with one touchdown pass to Jose Saenz and receiver Cole Gerlach ran for a 20 yard touchdown.

“We have playmakers all around. We have a great O-line and I feel that’s what makes us come together,” Guerrero said. “They’re what makes everything work.”

PSJA Memorial quarterback Ryan Reyna went 8-for-12 for 79 passing yards and one touchdown and ran for 85 yards and another score on 15 carries. Mathew Garcia was on the receiving end of Reyna’s touchdown pass late during the fourth quarter.

Gonzalez started the scoring with a 62-yard touchdown on a jet sweep, his first carry of the game. Guerrero closed the show with hard-nosed running and swift moves in the open field with touchdown runs from nine and 29 yards.

“We joke about it, but it’s true — I tell him ‘you got to run like a man.’ He makes plays when there’s no plays there to be made at times and we lean on him,” Krell said.

Next for Sharyland High is a rivalry game against Mission Veterans (3-3, 0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Richard Thompson Stadium in Mission.

PSJA Memorial is slated to face Roma (3-3, 0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Gladiator Arena in Roma.
