Sharyland High had great expectations coming into the UIL Class 5A state tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Bastrop.
But after an inauspicious start, the team couldn’t make up enough ground in the final round. Sharyland finished sixth with a two-day score of 688. Brownsville Veterans (684) finished fifth. Grapevine won the tournament with a score of 628.
Sharyland junior Laura Rodriguez started hot, shooting a 73 in the first round. But she lost control on the second day, falling out of contention for a medal with an 81. Rodriguez finished eighth.
Junior Raquel Flores made a push on Day 2 to finish ninth overall. Flores started the tournament with an 82, but put together a final-round 74 to finish with a two-day score of 156. Mansfield Lake Ridge’s Caitlyn Lindell and Magnolia’s Halle Whitney tied for the top spot with scores of 150. Whitney prevailed in the playoff to take home first place.
Brownsville Veterans’ Julie Lucio and Vanessa Campos were the best Valley finishers, tying for 13th with a 161.
Sharyland’s Amanda Shinn Roldan shot a first-round 93 and a second-round 88 for a two-day score of 181. Carolina Cantu had a 98 on Day 1 and a 100 on Day 2 to finish with a 198. Paulina Flores turned in an opening-round 108 before closing with a 99 to finish at 207.
