San Benito’s Gomez placed on administrative leave

San Benito athletic director and head football coach Dan Gomez has been placed on administrative leave, San Benito CISD director of communications Isabel Garza confirmed to RGVSports.com on Tuesday.

Details of the decision to place Gomez on administrative leave were not disclosed.

“The San Benito Consolidated Independent School District is hereby confirming that Dan Gomez has been on paid administrative leave and will return to work tomorrow,” read a statement from SBCISD’s public relations department. “The District does not comment on personnel matters; therefore, no further comment will be made regarding Mr. Gomez’ suspension and/or employment status. As a matter of public interest, however, it is important to note that any/all personnel matters are guided by applicable District policies and procedures. The District also ensures not only privacy for all employees but also a confidential, accurate, and thorough inquiry of any/all personnel matters.”

Gomez led the Greyhounds to the third round of the playoffs in 2022, marking the third time in his career he’s done so and the first time since 2018.

San Benito’s season ended with a 44-7 loss to Austin Westlake, finishing the year with an 11-2 overall mark.

Gomez has spent the past nine seasons as the head coach at San Benito, taking over in 2014 following the resignation of then-head coach Spencer Gantt. He has amassed a 75-29 record during that span, leading the Greyhounds to the postseason each year.

Calls to Gomez were made Tuesday afternoon, but no answer was received.
