San Benito remains No. 1 in RGVSports.com Top 10

San Benito continues to dominate this season, so the Greyhounds remain RGVSports.com’s No. 1 team atop its high school football Top 10 poll going into Week 4.

For the second straight week, San Benito was a unanimous No. 1 pick by RGVSports.com’s voters after dominating McAllen Memorial 35-7 last week to improve to 3-0.

The seven voters are writers who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers (the Monitor, Valley Morning Star and Brownsville Herald).

The Greyhounds’ resume has been impressive this season. San Benito has a 26-point win at Laredo United, a 21-point win versus San Antonio East Central and last week’s 28-point win against McAllen Memorial, then a RGVSports.com Top 10 team.

San Benito has a bye this week before starting District 32-5A play at Los Fresnos on Sept. 23.

Speaking of the Falcons, they remained No. 2 in the poll after improving to 2-0 with last week’s 37-14 win against McAllen High. Los Fresnos hosts McAllen Memorial this week to close its non-district slate.

Edcouch-Elsa was on a bye last week, but moved up two spots to No. 3. The Yellowjackets are 1-1, coming off a dramatic win over Edinburg Vela, and visit 2-1 La Joya Juarez-Lincoln on Thursday.

Edinburg Vela is fourth after it responded to the E-E loss with a 35-10 thumping of Brownsville Veterans Memorial last week. Vela is on a bye this week and hosts Edinburg North to open 31-6A play Sept. 23.

Weslaco High moved up two spots to No. 5 after its 21-6 win against Mercedes last week. The Panthers are on a bye this week and play rival Weslaco East to open 32-6A play Sept. 23.

Edinburg Economedes is 3-0, but made its debut in this season’s Top 10 poll after its 23-16 win over Weslaco East last week. The Jaguars went from unranked to No. 6 in this week’s poll.

Economedes is on a bye this week and hosts Edinburg High for its 30-6A opener Sept. 22.

Harlingen High dropped four spots to No. 7 after falling to 1-2. The Cardinals were blown out by San Antonio Reagan 41-7 last week and have lost two in a row. Harlingen High is on a bye this week and plays Harlingen South to open 32-6A play Sept. 23.

Weslaco East is No. 8 in the poll, dropping four spots. The Wildcats are 2-1 and suffered their first loss of the season last week against Economedes. East is on a bye this week and plays Weslaco High to open 32-6A play next week.

Roma stayed at No. 9 in the poll after falling to Laredo Nixon to open 31-5A play last week. The Gladiators are 2-1 and have another big game this week against Mission Veterans Memorial.

Brownsville St. Joseph remained No. 10. The Bloodhounds are 3-0 after beating Rio Hondo 48-28 last week.

Other teams receiving votes in this week’s poll: PSJA North, Harlingen South, McAllen Memorial, McAllen Rowe and Brownsville Veterans Memorial.
