It’s still early in the district season, but District 32-6A is already serving up a game between two of its best so far.

Two of the district’s top three offenses will be going at it tonight as the San Benito Greyhounds (2-2, 1-0) host the Los Fresnos Falcons (3-1, 1-0) at Bobby Morrow Stadium at 7:30 p.m. in San Benito.

Both teams are coming off big district-opening wins.

For San Benito head coach Dan Gomez, the attitude in their 39-14 win over Brownsville Hanna was what he has been looking for from his Greyhounds from the start of the season.

“Anytime we win any game, it’s big. I think that we played with the emotion that we’ve been asking these kids to play with all year,” Gomez said. “They found it within the opening week and played well.”

This past week the Greyhounds posted 566 yards of total offense in their win over Brownsville Hanna.

Leading the attack was senior quarterback Cristian Sierra, who passed for 291 yards and two touchdowns while running for another, and running back Gabriel Vasquez who had another big night on the ground with 139 yards on 15 carries and a pair of touchdowns.

Their offensive output has been tops in the district, averaging 402 yards a game of total offense.

Waiting to match them, however, is the Falcon’s offense, which has rushed for 929 yards with a stable of runners.

Gomez and the Greyhounds are ready for the attack though.

“We just want to go out there, line up, play ball, hit some body, look for the football, tackle the football and make good decisions when we have the football,” Gomez said. “That’s the main thing. We had a good practice and hopefully that dictates how Friday night is going to go.”

In the Falcons’ 62-0 thrashing of Brownsville Lopez last week, Los Fresnos back Eli Cruz scored four of his seven touchdowns on the season, while teammates Raul Lopez and Isaac Moreno also rushed for more than 80 yards against Lopez.

With depth in the backfield fueling his potentially potent offense, Los Fresnos head football coach Clint Finley feels good about his match up in a good District 32-6A.

“It was good to see a lot of our running backs getting some carries,” Finley told the Brownsville Herald Friday night. “A lot of our guys got to see some playing time, and that’s always beneficial for your depth. We need all the depth we can get in this stout district.”

Still, Finley knows it’s a process.

“I thought we did pretty well,” Finley added Friday. “We’re still not perfect. We’ve still got some issues we’ve got to work out, but I was happy with the effort. We’ve just got to continue to get better.”

On defense, both are in the middle of the district.

San Benito is ranked fifth in total defense, right behind the No. 4 ranked defense of the Falcons.

The Greyhounds may have a tough time stopping the run like they have all season, having given up 1080 yards already this season.

Meanwhile, the Falcons have surrendered 792 rushing yards.
