San Benito, E-E, Vela remain top 3 in Top 10 poll

The top three teams of the RGVSports.com high school football Top 10 poll remained the same heading into Week 6, but there was some drastic movement along the middle and bottom of the poll as teams started district play.

For the fourth consecutive week, San Benito was picked by RGVSports.com’s seven voters as the unanimous No. 1 team. The seven voters are writers who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers (the Monitor, Valley Morning Star and Brownsville Herald).

The Greyhounds had an impressive 34-26 win over fellow Top-10 mate and District 32-6A rival Los Fresnos last week. Los Fresnos is the No. 5 team in the poll, dropping a spot after the tough loss.

San Benito hosts Weslaco East this week. Weslaco East is No. 4 in this week’s poll after last week’s emotional win over rival Weslaco High. The Wildcats moved up four spots in this week’s poll.

At No. 2 is Edcouch-Elsa, which improved to 3-1 with a 45-12 beatdown of Donna North. The Yellowjackets travel to Donna to face the Redskins on Friday.

Edinburg Vela is No. 3, overcoming a slow start to defeat Edinburg North last week and improve to 3-1. The SaberCats play Edinburg High this week.

Behind Los Fresnos and Weslaco East in the middle of the poll, Harlingen High moved up a spot to No. 6 after its 23-16 win over previously undefeated Harlingen South. The Cardinals visit Brownsville Rivera on Saturday.

PSJA North jumped up three spots to No. 7. The Raiders are 4-0 after their 44-7 win over PSJA Memorial last week. PSJA North plays PSJA High this week.

McAllen Memorial is No. 8. The Mustangs are 3-2 after putting up 70 points in a 42-point win against La Joya Palmview last week.

Memorial plays at Mission High this week.

Port Isabel moved into the poll, and is the lone sub-5A representative this week. The Tarpons are 5-0 after a nice 33-27 win over previously undefeated Brownsville St. Joseph last week. Port Isabel is open this week.

And at No. 10, Weslaco High fell five spots after its big loss to Weslaco East last week. The Panthers are 2-2. Their losses are to Richmond George Ranch and the Wildcats.

Weslaco High hosts Brownsville Hanna this week.

Other teams receiving votes for this week’s poll: Mission Veterans Memorial, McAllen Rowe, Edinburg Economedes, and Brownsville St. Joseph.
