Sabercats and Tarpons fall in area round

Edinburg Vela’s season came to an end in the area round of the playoffs following a 14-7 loss against Corpus Christi Veterans in their Region IV-5A Division I matchup at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi on Friday.

Running back Jamal Polley started the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown run during the first quarter, but offense was hard to come by for the SaberCats (10-2) from that point on.

Vela and Veterans shut each other out during the second half as the Eagles pulled off the area round win.

Corpus Christi Veterans will face McAllen High in the Region IV-5A Division I semifinals at 4 p.m. Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Port Isabel Tarpons’ season also came to an end Friday night in Odem.

The Tarpons were defeated by the Jarrell Cougars 35-21 in an area-round meeting at Owl Stadium.

Port Isabel senior quarterback Rudy Barrera punched in a touchdown from 3 yards to cut the Cougars’ lead to 35-21 late in the fourth quarter, but it was too late for the Tarpons to muster a comeback.

The Cougars entered the second half of the game up 21-7 on the Tarpons and extended their lead to 35-7 before the Tarpons responded.

Jarrell gave up the opening touchdown of the game, but reeled off three straight touchdowns to go up 21-7.

Port Isabel started the scoring in the first quarter with a 21-yard touchdown run by tailback Luis Ramos. The freshman found space on a sweep to give the Tarpons a 7-0 lead.

The Tarpons (9-3, 2-1) end the season as the tri-District 16-4A DII champions and picked up a 28-13 bi-district win over Ingleside.
