Rivera soccer teams enjoy success

Despite less-than-ideal playing conditions, it was a good day Friday for the soccer teams from Rivera.

The Raiders and Lady Raiders each won games at their respective tournaments.

Playing at the McAllen Showcase at the De Leon Middle School Complex, the Lady Raiders improved to 3-0 in the tournament with Friday’s 3-1 victory over Sharyland High and 3-2 victory over San Antonio Clark. Yesenia Ortiz tallied all three goals for the Rivera girls against SharylandHigh.

The Lady Raiders were coming off Thursday’s 8-2 tournament victory against Corpus Christi King, in which Ortiz scored four goals.

The Rivera girls are scheduled to end tournament play against San Antonio Taft at noon Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Rivera boys are 2-0 in The Woodlands Boys Kilt Tournament in Houston . They opened tournament play with a 3-0 victory Thursday against Round Rock Westwood and followed it with a 5-1 triumph over Georgetown on Friday.

EliseoOrtiz scored a pair of goals to lead Rivera over Westwood, and David Alexander added the other tally. On Friday against Georgetown, EliseoOrtiz again had two goals, and solo tallies were added by Ray Alvarez, Jesus Torres and Freddy Villarreal.

The Raiders are scheduled to close out tournament play against AustinLakeTravisat 9 a.m. Saturday.

Also Friday, the La FeriaGirls Tournament was canceled due to inclement weather. Participating teams included Brownsville Veterans Memorial, Pace, IDEA Frontier and Port Isabel.
