BROWNSVILLE— Laredo Alexander’s Fernie Pineda edged Los Fresnos state qualifier Luis Osuna to win the 200-yard freestyle, and Harlingen South’s Justin Diaz and Weslaco High’s Brock Bloomquist punched their tickets to state in the 200 individual medley at the Region VIII-6A swimming finals held Saturday at Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center.
Osuna is so well-respected by his teammates that they view him like another coach – one who would push his teammates to get out of bed for early morning workouts, with competing deep into February in mind.
“Last year, we had a really good team overall,” said Osuna, who finished in 1 minute, 44.97 seconds to Pineda’s 1:44.31 in the 200 free. “Then I was thinking, ‘It’s not going to be the same. We lost a lot of good swimmers.’ At first it was going to be me, and just work on myself individually. But then I saw the potential we had, and I believed in every single one of them.”
All of that hard work paid off, transforming this rag-tag bunch into a powerhouse. Robert Waters was a three-year football player who found the pool to be his true calling. Jonathan Hernandez competed in his first regional meet after starting swimming two years ago. He credited his teammate Nate Layva with his development, and the duo became instrumental in helping capture a qualifying spot in the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.25). Lavya also competed in his first regional, having started competitive swimming just three years ago.
“I was always battling him in the pool,” Hernandez said. “I starting swimming my seventh-grade year, and I had to stop three times just to do one lap.”
The second-place Los Fresnos 400 freestyle relay (3:29.02) featured the same cast minus Hernandez, with Evyn Garcia as the anchor.
Diaz, who finished the 200 IM in 2:01.32, also won the 100 backstroke in 54.25 in one of the closest races of the day, with less than half a second separating Diaz, Welsaco High’s Daryl Wells (54.48) and Waters (54.73).
“I just told him to concentrate, and focus on his underwater (technique),” Harlingen South coach Hector Castañeda said. “And that’s pretty much what won it for him there at the end against those other guys.”
Waters (22.16) and Brownsville Hanna’s Quinten Deysel (22.5) dropped time from their prelim finishes but placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 50 freestyle, behind state qualifiers Cooper Gates of McAllen Memorial (21.71) and James Moore (21.86) of McAllen High.
The Lady Falcons, led by Citabria Barrales, Reina Apacible and Sarah Villarreal, earned the top spot in the girls team standings, and the Falcons finished fifth in the boys standings.
Villarreal, a senior, is the elder stateswoman of the Los Fresnos 200 freestyle relay squad, having experienced the heartbreak of just missing out on clinching a state berth as a freshman with an experienced bunch of seniors. Now that the roles have been reversed, she has made the most of her opportunity to lead by example, and guide sophomore Rebeca Osuna, junior Emily Rodriguez, and junior Maria Monogas to their first trips to state.
“I knew we all had to work hard so that wouldn’t happen again,” Villarreal said. “We really did that. We really wanted to make sure that we wouldn’t fall short, and we did our best to make sure that we would get there.”
The Lady Hawks, featuring Camille Lizada, Lola Garza, Catherine Duncan and Victoria Saenz, took third in the 200 medley relay in 2:01.04. The Lady Falcons took fourth in the 200 medley.
The Lady Hawks placed fifth overall in the team standings, and Hawks finished seventh.
Garza (1:13.18) qualified for state with a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Lizada (2:08.96) was fourth in the 200 freestyle, and Harlingen High’s Mckenna Stock (2:09.81) placed fifth.
“(Garza) had been kind of struggling all year in getting her time down,” Castañeda said. “Her technique was a little off, and I just told her to get back to the basics. Sure enough, she came out and swam fast Friday, and she swam faster today.”
HCISD diving coach Yvonne Moran has helped build a diving program at Harlingen High and Harlingen South from the ground up.
Harlingen High’s Amber Warner (365.4) and Harlingen South’s Cassie Vela (274.3) and Mae Kennedy (253.7) earned state-qualifying slots in the 1-meter dive.
Moran believes the sky is the limit for Warner, who is making her second trip to state, and Vela and Kennedy for the progress they’ve made this season.
“Our goal is to finish in the top 16 at state,” Moran said. “When I first came on board, we actually had a year or two with no divers. We’ve been starting at the bottom like everybody else and gradually working our way to the top.”
The mutual admiration and respect between district rivals — coaches and swimmers alike — was a common recurrence during post race exchanges and awards ceremonies. Los Fresnos coach Jaime Perez acknowledged that performing well on 32-6A turf is an added motivator when facing competition from Laredo and McAllen.
“Yeah, the Valley, baby,” Perez said. “In our district, it’s a tough district, and everybody supports and respects each other. But at the end of the day, it’s a great form of sportsmanship in which we come together and congratulate, and if we come out on the short end, we say, ‘See you next year.’’
