Rio Grande City’s Compean, Donna High’s Epperson explode from 3-point range

Chicago is hosting NBA All-Star Weekend, where the league’s best gather for three days of competition and festivities. One of the annual highlights of the weekend is the NBA’s 3-point contest featuring the top marksmen from long range.

Friday night, two Rio Grande Valley high school basketball players showed off their skills from deep, but not in a 3-point shootout situation. It was in live-game action.

Rio Grande City guard Mikey Compean exploded for 44 points as he led the Rattlers to a 90-65 blowout victory over playoff-qualifier Mission Veterans. Compean drilled 11 3-pointers during the game and stuffed the rest of the stat sheet with 10 rebounds and six assists for RGC.

Elsewhere, Donna High’s Eddy Epperson got in on the action as he dropped 35 points on Brownsville Porter, 33 of which came from behind the 3-point line. Epperson’s 11 3-point makes allowed Donna to cruise past Brownsville Porter 74-31 on the road. He added five steals against the Cowboys. Donna High (24-11, 10-3) is bound for the playoffs for the first time in five years, and Epperson is a major key to the team’s success.

Tuesday marks the final day of the regular season.
