Rio Grande City shuts out Brownsville Porter in second half for second district win

STAFF REPORT

The Rattlers jumped out to a big lead early, lost it but then regained control in the third quarter to down Brownsville Porter.

Senior quarterback Adrian Gonzalez, who entered Week 8 with the fourth-most passing yards in the district (844), didn’t have a lot of passing touchdowns to match (three). Gonzalez more than doubled his total with five touchdown passes against the Cowboys (1-6, 0-6). Allan Garcia caught two while Abelardo Lopez, J.C. Nuñez and Val Gomez hauled in a touchdown each.

“We had some miscues, but we had guys that stepped up,” Rio Grande City coach Aaron Garcia said. “My hats off to our staff, as well. I told these kids that they need to thank them for the gameplan today. We shut them (Brownsville Porter) defensively in the second half and we were able to put up some points.”

Rio Grande City (2-5, 2-4) will be on the road at Donna High (4-2, 3-2) next week.
