For the second straight week, five Sharyland High Rattlers scored. And for the second straight week, the Rattlers blew away a District 31-5A opponent.

Thursday night, Sharyland High dominated Laredo Martin 40-7 at Laredo. The Rattlers led 26-0 at halftime, a tribute to another quick start that put another team away early.

The win comes on the heels of a 45-14 win against Valley View last week.

“That’s something we’ve talked about,” Sharyland High coach Ron Adame said. “A couple weeks ago we didn’t have an identity. We didn’t want to be a team that waits to pounce, and we’ve emphasized that the last couple of weeks and I’m pleased with how the kids have gone about it.”

Fernie Perez, Blake Klein and Juan Zuniga scored on the ground. Alan Alvarez threw two touchdown passes as Sharyland High won its third game in a row and improved to 2-0 in district.

“We’ve always been about spreading the ball around,” Adame said. “It’s rare that we ride one person as the sole producer. That’s just our scheme, to distribute the ball to different people. Our boys are hungry and we’ve got skill players that work hard.”

Defensively, the Rattlers forced the Tigers into a safety. Linebackers Cesar Zecca and Tyger Brigmon led the charge, and cornerback Jim Esquivel collected an interception.

EDINBURG HIGH 17, EDINBURG ECONOMEDES 14: At Flores Stadium, Bobcats defensive back Anthony Alvarez’s second interception of the night with less than a minute left sealed the big upset win for Edinburg High.

Economedes had the ball on its own 23 with 53 seconds left and a last attempt to tie the game with a field goal or win with a touchdown. But Alvarez intercepted a pass on the first play of the drive to end matters.

Bobcats quarterback Abel Alonzo scored the go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Alonzo had two touchdowns in the game. Saul Ramirez had the other.

Economedes, which entered the game undefeated, led 14-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

“I tell you what, it’s a big win for our program,” first-year Edinburg High coach J.J Leija said. “We’ve instilled in these kids from the beginning that nothing’s going to be given to them. They have to work for it. So seeing the excitement from them on the sideline, it’s a great reward.

“It’s a confidence-builder. But it’s like we told them: Enjoy this win, and get ready to bring your lunch pail tomorrow.”

Edinburg High improved to 2-2, 1-0 in district.

PSJA NORTH 44, PSJA MEMORIAL 7: At San Juan. PSJA North improved to 4-0 and won its District 31-6A opener.

The Raiders have outscored opponents 141-22. PSJA Memorial fell to 0-4 and reached the end zone for just the second time this season.
