Sharyland High opened District 31-5A play in a big way Friday night, dominating Valley View 45-14 at Mission.

The Rattlers, coming off a bye week, improved to 2-1 and have won two straight games since falling to Weslaco East in Week 1.

“Our boys played well,” Sharyland High coach Ron Adame said. “We had a breakout game because we talked about taking that first possession and coming out with points. We did. We hadn’t done that this season. All three phases were clicking.”

Edgar Alanis caught three touchdown passes from Alan Alvarez. Backup quarterback Edgar Longoria lined up at slot receiver and ran in a score. Alvarez ran in another touchdown.

Andres Tamez returned a punt for a touchdown. James Harris recovered a fumble and Brandon Garcia collected an interception.

“It’s important, especially coming off a bye week and putting two wins together,” Adame said. “It builds momentum.”

Linebacker Cesar Zecca, defensive back Omar Mendiola and defensive lineman Max Robles led the way for a defense that ran the ball well, covered the middle of the field well and got good pressure on Valley View dual-threat quarterback Adam Solis.

Valley View fell to 0-2 in district play, 1-3 overall.

GRULLA 17, LYFORD 7: At Lyford, the Gators improved to 2-2 on the season with a win on the road.

Quarterback Fabian Anzaldua scored on a 40-yard run to tie the game at 7. Then, teammate Miguel Flores scored on a run during the middle of the fourth quarter before the Gators booted a 25-yard field goal to ice it.

“I thought offense played extremely well,” Grulla coach Abel Gonzalez III said. “Lyford has a high-powered offense and we were able to slow them down. It was a great bounce-back game for our defense (after a 35-34 loss to PSJA Southwest last week). They’re a very good team. They have a ton of athletes. Huge effort by our guys to hold them to 7 points.”

VICTORIA EAST 55, McALLEN HIGH 3: At Victoria, Victoria East quarterback Bailey Zappe threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in a dominating win against McAllen High.

East led 42-0 at halftime and 55-0 after three quarters. Adrian Rodriguez kicked a 37-yard field goal for McAllen High’s only points with 1:08 remaining in the game.
