Friday’s game between McAllen Memorial and San Benito at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium has been postponed until 6 p.m. today due to continued storms and lightning in the area.

On a night when many games were canceled, McAllen Memorial coach Bill Littleton and San Benito coach Dan Gomez said it was important to find another window to hold the game.

“We have some kids with lofty goals, and we want to give them every opportunity to play that we can,” Littleton said. “It’s important to play to stay in rhythm.”

With SAT testing and possible continued weather issues Saturday morning, the coaches decided to schedule the game for the evening rather than early afternoon.

For both teams, district play begins in two weeks, making their Week 3 meeting important for practice and conditioning.

“You have to play to be good and to get better,” Gomez said. “Having time off is only good for a short period of time during the season.”

To commemorate the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, all first responders and military wearing a uniform will be admitted to the game for free. Participating first responders and veterans will also be honored during a halftime ceremony.

The Gladiators broke through from a scoreless tie at halftime, thanks to Espinoza and Garcia, who rilled a 31-yard FG to give Roma a 16-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Roma held Uvalde (2-1) to just two TDs, including one in the final minute of play, after the Coyotes had scored 48 and 42 points, respectively, to start the year.
