McAllen High played stifling defense and running back Mark Martinez scored twice on the ground, lifting the Bulldogs to a 28-0 win against PSJA Memorial on Thursday at PSJA Stadium in San Juan.
McHi held Memorial to just 117 total yards and forced four turnovers, including a fumble Luis Zamora took 38 yards for a touchdown with 19.9 seconds to play before halftime.
Martinez was the Bulldogs’ focal point on offense, rushing 24 times for 110 yards. He scored on a 3-yard run with 4:30 to play in the third quarter and punched in a 1-yard dive with 7:07 remaining in the fourth.
Sophomore quarterback JR Cortez notched the team’s first score, finding the end zone from 1 yard out with 3:22 to play in the second quarter. Cortez finished the game 6-of-16 passing for 59 yards and an interception, plus 4 carries for 7 yards. He entered the game midway through the second quarter, replacing starter Ruben Rodriguez, who had completed 3 of 8 passes for 32 yards and run the ball 6 times for 24 yards before being pulled.
BROWNSVILLE LOPEZ 20, EDINBURG HIGH 15: At Edinburg, Brownsville Lopez’s Ivan Olivo ran 52 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, proving to be the difference.
The Bobcats led 15-13 at halftime after a pair of scoring runs by Nathan Marez, from 10 and 3 yards out. Jose Echavarria and Hugo Salas also scored for Lopez.
Edinburg High had a chance to take the lead in the final five minutes but turned the ball over on downs in the red zone.
