Volleyball All-Star Game highlighting Valley’s best

The Rio Grande Valley Volleyball High School All-Star Game will feature three matches today in an East-West format for Class 6A, 5A and Sub-4A teams at Sharyland Pioneer High School.
The Sub-4A matchups kicks off the festivities at noon, followed by the 5A game at 2 p.m. and 6A game at 4 p.m.
The showcase will feature 91 players representing 45 schools. McAllen Rowe has the strongest contingent of players with five, led by Mayda Garcia, the District 30-6A MVP and an All-Area first-team selection by The Monitor. Lady Warriors coach Magda Canales, who was named the All-Area coach of the year, will lead the 6A West team.
Los Fresnos coach Becky Woods heads the 6A East team, which features four of her Lady Falcons players.
The 5A West squad will be coached by Edinburg Vela’s Araceli Ortega, who has three of her Lady SaberCats on the team, including all-area second-team pick Jaida Muhammad, the District 31-5A Outstanding Defensive Specialist/Libero. Sharyland Pioneer has four members on the squad.
Their 5A counterparts have just 13 players from five schools, including three players from PSJA High, three from Edcouch-Elsa and three from Donna High. Yvette Tamez, a first-team All-Area choice from Donna, is also expected to play. She was named the District 32-5A Offensive Player of the Year. Edcouch-Elsa’s Ofelia Griffith will coach the 5A East group.
The Sub-4A East team has 14 players from seven teams, including three from San Perlita. The Sub-4A West has 19 players from eight schools, with Grulla, Hidalgo, Mission Juan Diego and Monte Alto sending three players apiece.
