RGVSports Top 10: Rattlers loss leaves open top spot for Mustangs

There is a new No. 1 team in this week’s RGVSports.com Top 10 poll. McAllen Memorial leapfrogged Sharyland High to take the top position.

Sharyland, which is coming off its first regular season loss in 27 games, received three first-place votes to Memorial’s two. Port Isabel, which is ranked No. 4, received the final first-place vote.

Memorial (3-1) took the top spot with four second-place votes. Now No. 2, Sharyland received two third-place votes and one fourth-place vote. Sharyland (3-1) defeated Memorial 49-28 in Week 1.

Memorial defeated Edinburg North last week and has a road game Friday at La Joya High.

Sharyland opens its District 31-5A slate against Edinburg Vela on Friday at home. Vela continues to climb in the poll. After a win over PSJA Memorial in Week 4, the SaberCats (4-0) are tied at No. 5 with Weslaco East. The 4-0 Wildcats slipped past La Joya High last week and travel to take on Edinburg North on Friday.

Coming in at No. 3 is McAllen High. McHi did not drop a spot despite a lopsided home loss to Corpus Christi Carroll on Friday. The 2-2 Bulldogs open District 30-6A play on the road Friday at Mission High.

Undefeated P.I. (4-0) continues to be the only sub-5A team in the poll. The Tarpons, who defeated Valley View 39-12 last week, play host to Brownsville St. Joseph on Friday.

Mission Veterans dropped a spot to No. 7. The Patriots were tied at No. 6 last week with Vela. They are idle in Week 5.

Mercedes is No. 8. The 2-1 Tigers did not play in Week 4 and opens district play against Brownsville Pace on Friday at home.

Harlingen High (1-2) stayed at No. 9. The Cardinals defeated Weslaco High for their first win of the season. They travel to take on Brownsville Rivera on Friday

Los Fresnos (2-1) maintained its No. 10 spot. The Falcons were idle last week and open District 32-6A with a home game against Brownsville Lopez.

No teams dropped out of the poll.
