The Edinburg Vela SaberCats (1-0, 0-0) held firm at No. 1 in the latest RGVSports.com Top 10 Poll after a dominant 42-6 win over last week’s No. 4 team McAllen Memorial. Vela received all six first-place votes from The Monitor, Valley Morning Star and The Brownsville Herald sports staff. The SaberCats are set for a Week 2 showdown against Harlingen High in The Monitor’s Game of the Week.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes Tigers (1-0, 0-0) remain at No. 2 after proving they’re deserving of their spot by defeating Brownsville Hanna 42-14 last week on the road. The Tigers will look to stay hot as they face a high-scoring Edinburg North team in Week 2.

Harlingen High (1-0, 0-0) stays at No. 3 after the Cardinals cruised past Laredo United South 34-10 in their season-opener last week. The Cardinals are set for a blockbuster Week 2 matchup as they take on No. 1 Edinburg Vela at 7 p.m. Thursday in Edinburg.

No. 4 PSJA North (1-0, 0-0) dropped from No. 5 after securing an overtime victory over Brownsville Rivera in Week 1. The Raiders are scheduled to host Edcouch-Elsa for a non-district game at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Mission High Eagles (1-0, 0-0) flew up two spots from No. 7 last week to No. 5 this week after winning a defensive battle against rival Mission Veterans 13-12. The Eagles are set to square off against Weslaco High in another non-district contest in Week 2.

Weslaco East remains at No. 6 after its season opener against rival Weslaco High was canceled due to safety precautions, keeping the Wildcats on the sideline an extra week. East is scheduled to open District 16-5A DI play this week at home against Donna High.

McAllen Memorial (0-1, 0-0) tumbled from No. 4 to No. 7 after suffering a 40-6 loss at the hands of No. 1 Edinburg Vela. The Mustangs have no time to worry about Week 1, however, as they’re headed into another Top 10 matchup in Week 2.

McAllen High (1-0, 0-0) defeated Edinburg High 14-6 in a defensive slugfest in Edinburg last Friday, which keeps the Bulldogs at the No. 8 spot. Next for McHi is a crosstown rivalry game against the No. 7 Memorial Mustangs.

Lyford and San Benito broke into the top 10 after not being ranked a week ago.

No. 9 La Feria (1-0, 0-0) pulled off an impressive 44-26 victory over Raymondville in its season-opener to pick up some votes. The Lions will see a step up in competition as they face Class 6A’s La Joya High on Friday at home.

The Greyhounds (1-0, 0-0) round out the top 10 poll after taking down McAllen Rowe 20-13 last week in a comeback effort. San Benito hosts Mission Veterans on Friday.
